Body elongate, moderately robust; dark brown to coppery metallic, with subtle iridescence visible under oblique light. Total body length 29.9 mm; maximum elytral width 9.29 mm.

Head uniformly dark brown, with slight metallic golden reflection; prognathous, moderately transverse (3.6 mm wide); frons distinctly concave and impressed medially. Surface sparsely and irregularly punctate; interspaces with fine microsculpture. Eyes prominent, hemispherical. Clypeus indistinctly delimited, slightly convex, covered with short golden setae.Antennae long, 9.3 mm in length, reaching base of pronotum when directed posteriorly; dark brown. Antennomere 2 small, globular; 3 elongate, rectangular, longer than wide; 4 elongate-triangular, narrowed basally, broadened apically. Antennomeres 4–6 serrate, forming saw-like edge; apical antennomere the narrowest, apically rounded, slender.

Pronotum 7.04 mm long, 8.73 mm wide across posterior angles; distinctly trapezoidal, broader than head, widest at base, narrowing anteriorly. Medially convex, with sharply produced, posteriorly divergent hind angles forming acute tips. Each posterior angle bearing distinct carina. Lateral margins moderately arcuate; anterior margin shallowly sinuate. Lateral margins distinctly bordered; anterior margin narrowly bordered. Surface densely and coarsely punctate on disc, becoming gradually finer and sparser toward sides; lateral portions of pronotum covered with fine grey pubescence. Prosternum with glabrous punctate medial portion; lateral portions bearing fine pale pubescence. Hypomeron moderately concave, densely covered with fine pale pubescence. Elytral and abdominal pubescence less developed than these in C. cantori .

Etymology. The specific epithet is the latinized adjective derived from the name of the island where the specimens were collected.

Distribution. Philippines: Mindoro.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03C687A4FFF69458FF505E82FDF7FDE3	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. See Agosti, D., Egloff, W., 2009. Coloration predominantly green, with golden reflections; some specimens with reddish or pinkish reflections, especially on pronotum and elytra.Head transverse, frons concave medially, punctation fine, irregular. Antennae moderately long (9 mm), almost reaching the base of the pronotum, dark brown; antennomere 2 small, subglobular; antennomere 3 elongate; antennomeres 4–10 triangular, forming a serrate margin; apical antennomere slender, apically rounded. No sexual dimorphism in antennal morphology was observed. Pronotum (Fig. 14) trapezoidal, 7.5–8.5 mm long, 9.5–10.5 mm wide across posterior angles; posterior angles acute, divergent, each with sharp carina. Pronotal punctation fine, becoming obsolete posteromedially; disc smooth, glossy, without depressions. Scutellum rounded, smooth, metallic, 1.5–1.8 mm wide. Elytra elongate, 21– 25 mm long, 9–11 mm wide, tapering apically; surface glossy, metallic green to golden, with weak striae; punctation fine, regular. Ventral surface metallic, smooth, sparsely pubescent. Legs slender, metallic, femora slightly thickened with fine pubescence; tarsi 4.5–5.0 mm (without claws). Aedeagus (Fig. 17) robust, well-sclerotized, symmetrical and elongate. Aedeagal length is 4 mm. Phallobase broad, relatively short. Parameres elongate, apically expanded; apices pointed, each bearing a short apico-lateral hook. Median lobe elongate, broad basally, gradually tapering apically, extending slightly beyond the apices of parameres; apex narrowly rounded.

Variation. Metallic coloration variable. Most specimens bright metallic green, some with golden reflections; others with distinct reddish reflections on dorsum, especially pronotum and elytra. Intensity of metallic gloss also variable, but surface always glossy, never dull as in C. r. mindanaoensis .

Distribution. Philippines: Luzon, Samar, Leyte.

Diagnosis. It differs from С. r. mindanaoensis (Figs. 7–9) by glossy metallic dorsum; pronotal punctation fine, becoming obsolete in posteromedial area; pronotal surface smooth and shiny.

Comments. This is the nominotypical subspecies, corresponding to the population from Luzon, including the type locality (Manila). The body of the holotype of C. rutilans in the Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris is reported as lost, with only a single leg remaining (Van Zwaluwenburg 1959). Campsosternus sumptuosus was later considered a variety of C. rutilans (Candèze 1891), and its true origin is unclear. Although originally attributed to Java, Hope (1843) suggested that at least one specimen came from Manila, indicating that it may in fact belong to the Philippine fauna. The type of C. proteus bears a handwritten label added by Candèze reading “ Rutilans ♀? ”, and based on external morphology, it appears conspecific to specimens historically identified as C. rutilans . Van Zwaluwenburg (1959) supported this interpretation, noting that a comparison between the C. proteus type and a female specimen of C. rutilans from the Philippines revealed no structural differences. While C. proteus (Figs. 4–6) was described as slightly paler and more golden in coloration, Van Zwaluwenburg considered Candèze’s suggestion that C. proteus represents a variety of C. rutilans to be probably valid. The original description of C. proteus emphasizes considerable variability in size, color, and external form among the specimens examined. Hope noted that individuals varied from blue to green, golden, and bronzed, and suggested that “two or three species may be confounded under the name of proteus .” Campsosternus proteus was also described from Manila, the same locality as C. rutilans, further supporting their conspecific status. This highlights the fact that the species was described based on a potentially mixed series and that the name C. proteus was applied to more than one taxon from the start. Consequently, the description is of limited diagnostic value, and examination of the type confirms that C. proteus is conspecific with C. rutilans .

Identification of type material: At present, only a single syntype is known and was available for examination. No evidence for the presence of additional syntypes could be found.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03C687A4FFF0945AFF505E9AFC3AFCDF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Campsosternus leachii (Fig. 22) was originally described from “ India Orientali circa Singapore ”, whereas C. eschscholtzii (Fig. 23) was described from “Manilla”. Direct examination of the type specimens of both nominal taxa revealed no consistent morphological differences, and the two specimens are here considered conspecific. An old handwritten label attached to the type of C. eschscholtzii (“ C. leachii = C. eschscholtzii ”) indicates that this synonymy had already been suspected by a previous researcher, although it was never formally published. Hope's original descriptions are brief and rely primarily on general coloration. This is a character known to be variable within the genus Campsosternus and does not provide diagnostic features that separate the two nominal taxa. Both names were published in 1843. C. leachii has priority based on page number and is therefore the valid name. C. eschscholtzii is classified as a synonym.

No additional material referable to this morphotype from India Orientalis, circa Singapore, was available. Despite extensive material examined from the Philippines, no specimens corresponding to this morphology were found. This raises doubts regarding the accuracy of the published type locality of C. eschscholtzii . In the absence of additional evidence, the type locality is retained as originally stated. Because no specimens referable to this species were found among the Philippine material, C. leachii is not treated as part of the Philippine fauna.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03C687A4FFFF9450FF505AFAFB48FCDF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
