The genus Clisitherella Chen, 1940 was established as a monotypical genus for a species from Tonkin differing from the species of Iphimoides Jacoby, 1883 in the modified male antennae. In 1983 Tan described another species of Clisitherella from China, C. fukienensis Tan. She wrote that it differs from C. suturalis in two characters: coloration of the legs, which are reddish in C. suturalis and blackish in C. fukienensis , and presence of dense and long setae on the ventral surface of the antennal segments in C. fukienensis . We studied the male from Tonkin, preserved in IOZ and labeled by Chen as C. suturalis . It possible that it is the holotype of C. suturalis , because we have not found any other specimens of this species in the IOZ collection. However, it has the geographical label “ Tonkin,” which is less detailed than mentioned in the original description. This specimen completely agrees morphologically with the description and has setae on the ventral surface of the antennal segments. Chen has not written anything about this character. The holotype of C. fukienensis has not been found in the IOZ collection, but we have found and studied the allotype, female. It has black legs, as mentioned in the description. We studied also numerous specimens from North Vietnam and found that the coloration of the legs as well as the shape of the aedeagus are quite variable in different specimens and not correlated with each other. Taking into account also the fact that the setae on the antennae are identical in all studied males, we consider all these specimens as belonging to one species.

In 2001, Medvedev downgraded Clisitherella to a synonym of Iphimoides , considering these antennal characters as not sufficient for treating the species of that group as a separate genus. He also downgraded Iphimoides suturalis Pic, 1928 to a synonym of I. pallidulus ( Jacoby, 1889) , described from Tenasserim. The photograph given by Kimoto & Gressitt (1982) for I. suturalis Pic in fact represents I. pallidulus . But the study of the types of I. suturalis Pic showed that it is the same species as Clisitherella suturalis Chen and C. fukienensis Tan and all these names must be synonymized. We consider the peculiar shape of the antennae in males in this species and the wide carina on the pronotum in both sexes as sufficient characters to consider this species at least in a separate subgenus. Therefore, we resurrect the name Clisitherella from synonyms of Iphimoides to the status of a monotypical subgenus of the genus Iphimoides . Iphimoides (Clisitherella) suturalis Pic, 1928 is the new status of this species with synonymy as given above.
