Tenthredo unifasciata Mocsáry, 1909
A junior subjective synonym of Tenthredo (Tenthredella) colon Klug, 1817 , syn. nov.
TYPES. Tenthredo unifasciata Mocsáry, 1909: 37 –38. Syntype (s) Ƥ. Type locality: “Sibiria orientalis: Raddefka.” [= Russia: Birobidzhan: Radde]. Primary homonym of Tenthredo unifasciata Geoffroy, 1785 [= Tenthredo (Maculedo) maculata Geoffroy, 1785 ]. Lectotype Ƥ, hereby designated ( Fig. 39 View FIGURE 39 – 40. 39 ).
= Tenthredella cucullata Enslin, 1912b: 105 , syn. nov. Replacement name for Tenthredo unifasciata Mocsáry, 1909 .
DISCUSSION. Firstly it should be noted that Ad Mol several years ago informed me that Tenthredo punctulata Konow, 1887 , is not conspecific with T. colon , although they have been considered to be synonyms since Enslin (1912a). Two taxa are therefore currently treated under the name Tenthredo colon . In order to clarify the nomenclatural situation, Ad Mol allowed me to publish his following text:
“ Tenthredo semicolon Mol , nom. nov. pro Tenthredo punctulata Konow, 1887 (junior primary homonym of Tenthredo punctulata Klug, 1817 = Rhogogaster punctulata (Klug, 1817)) . Tenthredo punctulata Konow is based on syntypes Ƥ, 3. Lectotype Ƥ of T. punctulata Konow hereby designated, see Fig. 40 View FIGURE 39 – 40. 39 . Type locality: ‘Gall. med.’ [= central France] (Konow 1887: 4). Deposited in the SDEI.”
Unlike T. colon , in T. semicolon the sculpture of the mesonotum is less developed, the shape of the serrulae of the saw is different and the males are ventrally paler (Mol in preparation). Furthermore, the COI barcodes are different: (Barcode Index Numbers: BOLD:AAF0644 in colon , and BOLD:AAF0645 in semicolon ).
It remains uncertain if Enslin had seen additional material or not. There is no material under this name in the Zoologische Staatssammlung, Munich, and no additional syntypes could be traced in the HNHM. It seems that Enslin’s information on the variability of cucullata is speculation based on the colour of the lectotype only. There are very few subsequent published records of cucullata , and these records are obviously all based on Mocsary’s original description or Enslin’s revision from 1920 and therefore all refer to the lectotype specimen.
The lectotype ( Fig. 39 View FIGURE 39 – 40. 39 ) of unifasciata (= cucullata ) morphologically agrees with central European Tenthredo colon . The abdomen of colon females usually has the apical five segments red, apically often somewhat darkened. The lectotype of unifasciata seems to be a melanic specimen with a mainly dark abdomen and nearly completely dark hind femora (in colon usually partly reddish). Two females from Utulik ( Russia, 51.54444 N, 104.05583 E, 14.07.2005, leg. E. Heibo & I. Kolesyankina, coll. Heibo) are very similar to the unifasciata lectotype. Their COI barcodes (Barcode Index Number: BOLD:AAF0644) agree with European and Nearctic Tenthredo colon data. Another specimen from the Irkutsk area (Sljudjanka 50 km E, leg. Mikkola & Viitasaari, 08.– 13.07.1984, coll. M. Viitasaari) is similar, but the reddish colour extends to the 6th tergite.
