Acraea pudorina Staudinger, 1885

Larsen 1996: pl. 54, fig. 678i. d ’ Abrera 1997: 167 (2 figs). SI: Figure 4a – h.

Forewing length: male 27.5 – 30.5 mm [mean (n = 9) 28.83 mm, SD = 0.391]; female 24.0 – 31.0 mm [mean (n = 9) 27.94 mm, SD = 2.126].

Note: the type locality of this species was given as Zanzibar but, as Kielland (1990, p. 162) suggests, this was almost certainly an error . Often considered to be a Kenyan endemic, despite its listing as such by Ackery et al. (1995, p. 244) and the uncertainty expressed by Larsen (1996, p. 373), this species does also occur in north-eastern Tanzania. Van Someren (1939, p.139, as A. acrita pudorina ) notes two forms of male from the Chyulu Hills, southern Kenya: ‘ a dry form in which the marginal loops are obscure and the other in which these are clear and well defined. Six of the females are of the very dark blackish type ’. Females are somewhat olivaceous compared to the bright orange males. See note below concerning dry-season forms of A. utengulensis .
