Bothriochloa ischaemum (L.) Keng
status

Andropogon ischaemum Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 1047. 1753.

"Habitat in Europae australioris aridis." RCN: 7561.

Lectotype (Marchi & Longhi-Wagner in Bol. Inst. Bioci. Univ. Fed. Rio Grande do Sul 57: 41. 1998): Herb. Linn. No. 1211.26 ( LINN) .

Current name: Bothriochloa ischaemum (L.) Keng View in CoL View at ENA ( Poaceae ).

Note: Although Kerguélen (in Lejeunia, n.s., 75: 94. 1975) stated "Type: …LINN”, this is not accepted as a formal typification, for the reasons explained by Cafferty & al. (in Taxon 49: 240. 2000). Unfortunately, the taxonomic identity of Marchi & Longhi-Wagner’s designated type appears to correspond with A. gerardii Vitm. , as noted by Fernald & Chase (in Rhodora 50: 154. 1948). Unaware of this typification but aware of the identity of the material in LINN, Scholz (in Cafferty & al. in Taxon 49: 245. 2000) designated Herb. Burser I: 101 ( UPS) as the lectotype. Although it does not correspond with the traditional usage of B. ischaemum, Marchi & Longhi-Wagner’s typification has priority. It seems that a conservation proposal will be necessary if the traditional usage of this name is to be maintained.
