Middle-late Miocene (Bessarabian): Eastern Paratethys Sea ( Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia). (Sladkovskaya 2017)

Genus Jujubinus Monterosato, 1884

Type species. Trochus matonii Payraudeau, 1826 View in CoL ) [= Jujubinus exasperatus (Pennant, 1777) View in CoL ], SD ( Crosse 1885: 140). Present-day, Mediterranean Sea.

Diagnosis. High conical shells with flat whorls and indistinct suture. Marked basal angulation frequently associated with peripheral rim. Sculpture consisting of usually beaded spiral cords with distinct prosocline lamellae between spiral cords. Base flat to weakly convex. Umbilicus closed.

Remarks. Jujubinus s.s. appeared during the Oligocene. Cretaceous records, as listed by Cossmann (1918), are based on misidentifications ( Kiel & Bandel 2001). Jujubinus (Scrobiculinus) quinquelineatus Traub, 1984 and Jujubinus (Strigosella) truncus Traub, 1984 , from the Paleocene of Austria, are based on poorly preserved specimens with open umbilicus. In addition, J. truncus has a low trochiform outline. Both species are unrelated with Jujubinus . Paleocene and Eocene records of Jujubinus might represent another genus and are listed herein as “ Jujubinus ” (see Discussion chapter).
