Type Locality: West Africa.

Vernacular Names: Sooty Mangabey.

Subspecies: :

Subspecies Cercocebus atys subsp. atys Audebert 1797

Subspecies Cercocebus atys subsp. lunulatus Temminick 1853

Distribution: Senegal to Ghana.

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; U.S. ESA – Endangered as included in C. torquatus ; IUCN – Critically Endangered as C. a. lunulatus, otherwise Lower Risk (nt).

Discussion: The subspecies lunulatus appears strongly distinct, and may be a separate species ( Groves, 2001 c:242-3). Separated from torquatus by Groves (2001 c:242).
