Lagideus longicus Smith, 1990: 118 .

Female. Length, 8.5 mm. Black; legs white with coxae, apical tarsomere of fore and midlegs, midfemur except white at base, apical third of hind femur, and apical three-fourths of hind tibia and entire hind tarsus black. Wings lightly, uniformly infuscated; veins and stigma black. Head: Vertex and frons shiny with irregular ridges between ocelli and eye; covered with fine white hairs. Antennal length about 1.5 × head width, slightly widened toward apex, antennomeres 3–7 with very short stublike rami, each broader at apex than at base; antennomeres 5–7 each about 2 × longer than broad; antennomeres 3 and 4 subequal in length. Malar space half to three-fourths diameter of front ocellus. Thorax: Hind basitarsomere about equal in length to remaining tarsomeres combined; inner hind tibial spur about 0.66 × length of hind basitarsomere. Abdomen: Sheath in lateral view straight above, rounded at apex and below, in dorsal view broad at base and tapering to acute apex (similar to Smith 1990: fig. 293). Lancet ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 19 – 23 ) with about 18 serrulae, serrulae with fine anterior and posterior subbasal teeth, pointed at apices, and decreasing in size and depth toward apex; annuli 1–3 with very short spines, annulus 4 with slightly longer spines, annuli 5–10 with dense, long spines on dorsal halves, half or more width of segments, ventral halves of annuli 5–10 with shorter spines about a third or less width of segments; annuli 11 to apex without spines except for a few dorsally on annulus 11.

Male. Described by Smith (1990). Antenna as in Fig. 25 View FIGURES 24 – 26 . Genitalia as in Figs. 29, 33 View FIGURES 27 – 34 .

Specimens examined. Costa Rica: Cartago, 4km NE Cafion, Genesis II, 2350m, VI-1995, P. Hanson (1 Ƥ, 1 3, UCR); same, V-1995 (2 3, UCR, USNM); same VII-1995 (2 Ƥ, UCR, USNM); same, ii-iii-1995 (1 3, UCR); same V-1996 (1 3, USNM); Costa Rica, Prov. Cartago, C. Universita Rio, 13-8-1977, Col. Aguiles Navarro (1 Ƥ, UCR).

Remarks. Only the male was described by Smith (1990). The female is associated by a series of specimens from the same locality in Costa Rica. The female will go to couplets 13 and 14 in my 1990 key; see the preceding revised key for separation from similar species. It is separated from L. luticus , L. mulsus , and L. oranus by the black hind tarsi and the stout spines on the dorsal halves of annuli 5–10. The stout spines on the dorsal halves of annuli 4–12 of L. luticus are extremely long, longer than their respective segments and overlap spines on adjacent segments. The lancets of L. mulsus and L. oranus have uniformly short spines the width of the lancet ( Smith 1990, figs. 323, 324).
