Kongsbergia View in CoL (s.s.) setosa sp. nov.

( Figs. 23–27, 87–89)

Description. Character states of the setosa subgroup. Male: Idiosoma in dorsal view elongate and ellipsoidal, usually widest near midlength. Dorsal shield ( Figs. 23, 87) with anterior margin nearly transverse or slightly convex and crenellate with a small medial projection or a very small depression medially ( Figs. 23a and 23b arrows) but lacking a nipple- or dome-shaped projection; edge of shield linear or slightly convex in area between eyes and humeral region and with a modest humeral angle; with reticulate sculpturing weakly developed and diffuse in area between and anterior to postocular setae; posterior edge of shield conspicuously indented to form a shallow notch; anteromedial hump moderately large, lateral ridges moderately well developed and meeting lateral edges of shield near midlength, posterior depression moderately deep; ridge bearing excretory pore moderately well developed; bearing three pairs of long, curved, thick setae on posterior edge; variable in color from colorless to yellowish with red or purple patches anteriorly and posteriorly. Ventral shield ( Figs. 25, 88) with projections covering insertions of fourth legs well developed; conspicuously indented posteriorly to form a concave notch bearing gonopore and bearing paired patches of numerous, long, thick, curved setae on posterior edge flanking gonopore. Pedipalp ( Fig. 26) with femur enlarged and bearing three papillate projections proximoventrally. Fourth leg ( Fig. 27) with segments and setae as illustrated. Female: Dorsal shield ( Figs. 24, 89) similar in shape, sculpturing and color to that of male but with ridges relatively weakly developed; anterior margin with or with a small medial projection ( Figs. 24a and 24b arrows); lacking long, curved setae on posterior edge. Ventral shield with projections covering insertions of fourth legs smaller than in male and lacking patches of curved setae on posterior edge. Pedipalp with femur not enlarged and tibia proportionally longer than in male Measurements: Male (n=5): Length/width dorsal shield 320–330(320)/254–290(272), length/width ventral shield 346–370(352)/ 264–290(280). Lengths pedipalp segments: Tr 21–24(23), Fe 72–92(92), Ge 28–34(28), Ti 100–106(106), Ta 30–34(30). Height pedipalp femur 65–88(88). Etymology. From the Greek setose meaning “adorned with setae” to describe the paired patches of numerous, long, curved setae on the ventral shield flanking the gonopore.

Distribution. Streams of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario in Canada; Alabama, Georgia, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and West Virginia in USA.

Remarks. Males of Kongsbergia setosa sp. nov. differ conspicuously from those of all other North American species of the genus in having paired patches of numerous, long, curved setae on the posterior edge of the ventral shield flanking the gonopore. Males and females of most populations have a medial projection on the anterior margin of the dorsal shield but this projection is absent in members of some populations.
