The monotypic genus Smalleyus is supported by one main autapomorphy (character 48), which is the presence of a subrectangular, single, apical lobe of the caudo-marginal projection. Other diagnostic characters included in this branch are the presence of spinules and spines (character 43) on the apical portion of the gonopod and on the distal crest of the caudo-marginal projection (character 60).
Alvarez (1989) mentioned that although the general shape of the gonopod clearly places this species in the Pseudothelphusini , its affinities are obscure, as no other species in the tribe presents a gonopod with three apical crests covered with spines.
