Petrolisthes fimbriatus Borradaile, 1898

Petrolisthes lamarckii var. fimbriatus Borradaile, 1898: 466 (type locality: Rotuma, South Pacific).

Material examined. New Caledonia. Lagoon, 22°18.23’S, 166°26.15’E, intertidal, rock, 31. Oct. 1995, coll. A. Myers, 2 ovig. females CL 3.9, 5.1 mm. Platier de Thio, St Gabriel, lagoon, low tide, 0.8 m, 19 May 1996, coll. B. Richer de Forges, 1 ovig. female CL 3.3 mm. Lagon, Récif Senez, 7 m, 7 Sept. 1992, coll. P. Bouchet, 1 female CL 3.4 mm.

Remarks. This species is closely allied to P. obtsusifrons Miyake, 1937 b, it has been found to be the senior synonym of P. varicolor Osawa, 1998 c (see Remarks for P. lamarckii ). However, P. f i m b r i a t u s is distinguished from P. obtsusifrons by the convex branchial margins of the carapace (the branchial margins of P. o b t - susifrons are subparallel).

Yang & Sun (2005) recorded P. f i m b r i a t u s from Hainan Island in China. However, their illustrated specimen (fig. 2) seems to be P. obtsusifrons based on the subparallel median branchial margins of the carapace.

Distribution. Nansha and Xisha Islands in China, Philippines, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Caroline, Marshall, Ellice, Tonga, and Phoenix Islands; interdidal, underneath rocks on reef flats ( Kropp 1984; Yang & Xu 1994; Osawa 1998c).
