Emesopsis Uhler 1893 View in CoL

Emesopsis Uhler 1893: 748 View in CoL (new genus; type species: Emesopsis nubilus Uhler View in CoL , by monotypy); Wygodzinsy 1966: 355 (description); Maldonaldo 1990: 144 (catalogue); Cassis & Gross 1995: 301 (catalogue).

Calphurnia Distant 1909: 502 (new genus, type species: Calphurnia reticulate (= Emesopsis nubilus View in CoL ) Distant 1909: 503, by original designation); Wygodzinsky & Usinger 1960: 243 (synonymy).

Hadrocranella Horváth 1914: 647 (new genus, type species: Hadrocranella imbellis Horváth 1914 , by monotypy); Wygodzinsky & Usinger 1960: 243 (synonymy).

Emesopsis (Hadrocranella) View in CoL : McAtee & Malloch, 1926: 119 (subgeneric arrangement).

Diagnosis. Emesopsis in Australia can be recognised by the following combination of characters: head, thorax and basal abdominal sternite densely clothed in wool-like pile; darkened areas of wings sometimes raised, with unpigmented pits, M and Cu separate at base of truncate discal cell; 2nd segment of rostrum distinctly swollen.

Remarks. This genus was previously diagnosed by the presence of a small subquadrate basal cell, however, this character is now known to be absent in one mainland Australian species, Emesopsis infenestra ( Tatarnic et al. 2011) , as well as the new Lord Howe Island species E. cirratus , described herein. This latter species is the sole member of the genus to be found on Lord Howe, and is distinguished by slight wing reduction, with the apex of the hemelytra distinctly upturned.
