Pseudobargylia Wygodzinsky 1951 View in CoL

Pseudobargylia Wygodzinsky 1951: 610 View in CoL (new genus, type species: Emesa iuncea Erichson 1842 , by original designation); Wygodzinsky 1966: 537 (description); Maldonado 1990: 136 (catalogue); Cassis & Gross 1995: 298 (catalogue).

Diagnosis. Pseudobargylia can be recognised by the combination of the following characters: apterous, clypeus lacking projections, foretarsi two-segmented, foretarsi ventrally setate, claws fully-developed, foretarsi at least 1/ 3rd length of foretibiae, forefemora with series of spines not extending along entire length of vental margin, ninth tergite mostly visible from above, and eighth tergite not covering gonocoxites laterally.

Remarks. Wygodzinsky (1966) reported that Pseudobargylia is the most species-rich and abundant genus of metapterine Emesinae in Australia. The genus contains nine described species that are mostly found in temperate eastern Australia, extending to Kangaroo Island (SA) in the south and Maryborough (QLD) in the north. He hypothesised that P. l e a i is related to P. brewarrina Wygodzinsky 1956 , P. marsupialis Wygodzinsky, 1966 and P. revoluta Wygodzinsky, 1966 on the basis of male genitalia characters.
