Type Material. Lectotype (male): Queensland, Gayndah [ca. 25° 37' S, 151° 37' E] [labels: Hydraena luridipennis MacLeay Lectotype P. Zwick 1975 [written on card with specimen] // Gayndah // LECTOTYPE designated by // On permanent loan from MACLEAY MUSEUM University of Sydney // Aedeagus drawn by P. D. Perkins // DIGITAL IMAGE captured 2004 P. D. Perkins // Hydraena luridipennis MacL . Lecto-Typus des. P. Zwick 1977] [three paralectotypes and labels on same pin]. Deposited in the ANIC.

Differential Diagnosis. Recognized by the combination of the large body size (ca. 2.25 mm), the shape and relative size of the pronotum, the very small plaques, and the unique shapes of the male metatibiae and the female elytral apices (Fig. 86). The metatibiae of males are weakly arcuate on the lateral surface, the inner surface is gently sinuate, and bears a moderately sparse brush of hairs over the basal 2/3. Females are immediately recognized by the uniquely shaped, triangularly produced elytral apices. The body size, dorsal sculpture and plaques are similar to H. simplipes and H. impercepta , but males of those species have differently shaped metatibiae, and females have non-modified elytral apices. The aedeagi of the three species are quite distinct (Figs. 91–94, 96).

Description. Size: Lectotype (length/width, mm): body (length to elytral apices) 2.25/0.91; head 0.37/ 0.49; pronotum 0.53/0.68, PA 0.55, PB 0.63; elytra 1.42/0.91. Dorsum brown, except head and pronotal disc dark brown or piceous, legs and palpi brown, distal 1/2 of last palpomere darker.

Frons punctures ca. 1xef; interstices ca. 0.5 to 1xpd. Clypeus microreticulate laterally, finely sparsely punctate medially. Mentum weakly shining, very finely sparsely punctate; postmentum microreticulate. Genae raised, lacking posterior ridge. Pronotum densely coarsely punctate, punctures on disc deep, ca. 3xpd those of frons, interstices varying from narrow walls to ca. 1xpd; PF1 absent; PF2 moderately deep, separated by about width of a fovea; PF3 and PF4 moderately deep, broad.

Elytral punctures slightly smaller than largest pronotal punctures. Intervals not raised, shining, width ca. 1.5xpd. Interstices between serial punctures 1xpd or smaller. Apices (male) in dorsal aspect separately rounded, in posterior aspect margins forming marked angle with one another.

Plaques indistinct (see notes). P1 laminate; median carina angulate in profile. P2 narrow, l/w ca. 4/1, sides parallel or slightly diverging toward blunt apex. No midlongitudinal carina between mesoventral intercoxal process and median triangular depression. Cuticle non-asperite under hydrofuge pubescence. AIS flat, width at arcuate posterior margin ca. 3x P2. Profemur (male) with pointed tubercle on medial surface at about basal 1/3. Protibia straight, widest subapically. Metatibia weakly arcuate on lateral surface, inner surface gently sinuate, with brush of hairs over basal 1/2. Abdominal apex markedly asymmetrical.

Aedeagus (Fig. 91, 92) main-piece tubular, with strong, arrowhead-shaped process on right side of apical part; left paramere slightly cupped, with four groups of setae; right paramere lobe-shaped apically, with two groups of setae. Female last tergite with apicomedian incision; submarginal setae stout, forming a row, tips blunt and angled ventrad; gonocoxite as illustrated (Fig. 214).

Distribution. Widely distributed in the eastern one-half of Australia, with very disjunct locality records in western Western Australia and northern Northern Territory (Fig. 238).

Remarks. The metaventral depression is wider and deeper in males than in females. In both sexes the plaques are reduced to a very small oval or circular area on each side of the depression, near the base; in some specimens the plaques may be difficult to see, but are indicated by the less dense hydrofuge hairs. Females have simple legs, but are immediately recognized from all others by the triangularly produced elytral apices (Fig. 86). The two very disjunct localities, Badgingarra (Western Australia) and Humpty Doo (Northern Territory) are represented by a single male each. The synonyms of this species are thoroughly discussed by Zwick (1977).
