Hydraena hamifera Zwick, 1977: 180 View in CoL .

Type Material. Holotype (male): Queensland, Lever’s Plateau via Rathdowney , [ca. 28° 11' S, 152° 48' E] [labels: "Lever's Plateau, via Rathdowney, 2.iv.1965. S.E.Q. T. Weir // T. 7226. // Hydraena hamifera sp. n. det. P. Zwick 1975 Holotype "]. Deposited in the QMBA. GoogleMaps

Differential Diagnosis. Recognized by the moderately densely punctate pronotal disc with smooth interstices, the almost parallel-sided elytra with comparatively wide explanate margin, the slightly raised plaques, and, in males, the band of recumbent setae on the inner surface of the metatibia (Fig. 160). Specimens are usually slightly less densely and less coarsely punctate than other members of the hamifera group. The aedeagus (Fig. 167) is very distinctive; in some cases it will be necessary to dissect males for certain determinations.

Description. Size: holotype (length/width, mm): body (length to elytral apices) 1.63/0.69; head 0.22/ 0.39; pronotum 0.38/0.54; elytra 1.00/0.69. Dorsum reddish brown, lateral margins of pronotum, legs and palpi lighter, head darker.

Frons punctures slightly larger than 1xef; interstices shining, 1–3xpd. Clypeus microreticulate. Mentum shining, very finely sparsely punctate; postmentum microreticulate. Genae raised, lacking posterior ridge.

Pronotal punctures on disc ca. 2xpd and deeper than those of frons, interstices shining, 1–3xpd, punctures denser at anterior; PF1 and PF4 absent; PF2 very small and shallow; PF3 microreticulate, moderately deep.

Elytra rather parallel sided, moderately explanate, posterior declivity moderately abrupt; serial punctures very regular, about equal size of largest pronotal punctures; intervals not raised, shining, width ca. 1xpd, as are interstices between punctures of a row; apices in dorsal aspect gradually rounded to subtruncate, in posterior aspect margins form shallow angle with one another.

Ratios of P2 width and plaque shape (P2/w/l/s) ca. 1/1/4/1. P1 almost laminate; median carina posterior extreme slightly more elevated than remainder. P2 narrow, l/w ca. 3/1, sides parallel, apex blunt. Plaques located in posterior 3/5 of metaventrite at margin of median depression, plaques slightly convergent anteriorly, each plaque slightly raised, gradually tapering anteriorly. AIS flat, width at arcuate posterior margin 2– 3x P2. Protibia weakly arcuate, slightly thickened in distal 1/2; metatibia with weak brush of recumbent and/ or decumbent setae on medial surface of distal 7/10. Last sternite slightly asymmetrical, margin with very small point; last tergite with deep, asymmetrical, off-center concavity.

Aedeagus (Fig. 167) main-piece with large, arm-shaped process; base very asymmetrical; three terminal processes, two of which are smaller and adjacent; parameres simple. Female last tergite with three incisions, delimiting four lobes, setae slender, tapering. Female last tergite with three incisions, delimiting four lobes, setae slender, tapering; gonocoxite as illustrated (Fig. 219).

Distribution. Widely distributed in the far eastern area, from Queensland to Victoria (Fig. 253).

Notes. Plaques of females tend to be slightly wider and slightly closer together than those of males. This species, originally described from five specimens, is one of the most commonly collected Australian Hydraena ; I have identified 927 specimens from 106 localities.
