Leptonema ferelunatum sp. nov.

Figs. 1–7 View FIGURES 1 – 7

Leptonema ferelunatum is a member of the L. crassum Group, as defined by Flint et al. (1987), although it has the median suture of the basal abdominal sternum. The new species, like others in the L. crassum Group, lacks the usual processes of the phallus. This new species is very similar to L. lunatum Flint, McAlpine & Ross , to which it is closely related, sharing the large, broadly rounded, lateral lobes of tergum X, and the apicodorsal lobes of the phallus. Furthermore, the processes of sternum V are long, narrow, and crescentic in both species. In L. lunatum , tergum X has a lateral projection on the inner margins of the lateral lobes, projections which are absent in the new species. Apicodorsal lobes of the phallus in the new species are longer and curved over the stem of the phallus, while in L. lunatum they are upturned, but not curved.

Description. Adult male ( Figs. 1–7 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ): Length of forewing: 19.0–22.0 mm (n=5). Head, antennae, maxillary palps and legs stramineous in alcohol. Wings light brown, without maculae. Malar space about 1/3 height of eye. Frontal setal wart between antennal bases; 1 pair of small antennal setal warts not clearly delimited; 1 pair of large, subtriangular posterior setal warts behind eyes; 1 pair of slender setal warts, bearing long dark setae on postgenal area. Vertex area between posterior warts with 1 pair of knobs (probably corresponding to reduced ocelar setal warts). Maxillary palps 5-segmented, long, setose; segment III about 2/ 3 length of segment II; segment V long, about half length of all other segments together ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ). Tibial spur formula 2-4-4. Abdominal segments II-VIII each with pair of vestigial larval branched gills ventrolaterally on posterior margin. Sternum II with mesal suture; sternum V with pair of oblique, falciform, slender processes with posterior ends close to meson ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ).

Male genitalia ( Figs. 3–7 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ): Segment IX short in lateral view ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ); in dorsal view with large V-shaped keel ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ). Segment X with wart a slightly produced; warts b and c absent; lateral lobes large, rounded apically, with dorsal surfaces slightly concave, each with large setiferal lobe; ventral surface of tergum X slightly sclerotized, shallowly notched at apex; mesal lobes reduced ( Figs. 3, 4 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ). Inferior appendages 2- segmented, basal segments longer than apical segments, each basal segment with dorsal tuft of long setae on distal portion; apical segments nearly 1/4 length of basal segments, with short spinulous setae on inner margins ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ). Phallus tubular, with phallobase short ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ); apex without any processes, bearing pair of large, rounded dorsolateral lobes ( Figs. 6, 7 View FIGURES 1 – 7 ).
