Chonocephalus digitalis Borgmeier, 1967: 207 View in CoL (part). Syn. nov.
I have slide mounted the holotype female and allotype male, which were caught in copula. I have examined a further 8 paratype males of this species. The holotype of C. digitalis View in CoL has proved to be conspecific with C. americanus View in CoL . I therefore formally propose the synonymy of C. digitalis View in CoL with C. americanus View in CoL . Four paratypes of C. digitalis View in CoL proved to be C. heymonsi View in CoL (see below). Indeed Borgmeier’s (1967) Fig. 20 of the hypopygium of C. digitalis View in CoL is in fact C. heymonsi View in CoL .

Female holotype and male allotype, caught in copula, and 8 paratype males, U.S.A., Virginia., Falls Church, light trap, 10 June 1958, 111 September 1961 and 1726 July 1962, W. W. Wirth ( USNM 2662); 5 males from type locality, 13 and 22 August, 2 and 28 September 1960 and 17 September 1962, W. W. Wirth ( USNM); 1 male, Virginia, Fairfax Co., Springfield, 2531 May 1989, Malaise trap, G. W. Courtney ( LACM Ent. 095464); 2 males, North Carolina, Murphy, Peach Tree Road, 1620 June 1998, Malaise trap, R. George ( CUMZ 2082); 2 males, 3 females, North Carolina, Swain Co., Revensford, floodplain forest, pitfall traps, 18 August 2001, E. Bernard, T. Goodrich, P. Jennings ( CUMZ 1471); 2 females, Tennessee, Sevier Co., Twin Creeks, 594m, Malaise trap, 3 18 July 2000, C. Parker, I. Stocks, M. Petersen ( CUMZ 1469). Holotype male of C. digitalis, Malaya , Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and paratype male, Selangor, N. Klang Rantau Panjang ( USNM 2664). Also recorded from every other Biogeographic Region except the Palaearctic.
