Oxysarcodexia grandis Lopes, 1946 View in CoL
( Figs 139–141 View FIGURES 139–147 )
Oxysarcodexia grandis Lopes, 1946b: 82 View in CoL ; Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Angra dos Reis. Holotype male, female allotype, 13 male paratypes and 11 female paratypes in MNRJ.
Diagnosis. Male. Length 8.0–9.0 mm. Postocular plate with golden pollinosity. Ocellar bristles well developed. Thorax and abdomen with intense golden pollinosity, abdominal T5 with golden pollinosity along the entire extension. Three well-differentiated post-sutural dorsocentral bristles posteriorly and a smaller bristle can be present among these. Apical scutellar bristles present. Legs blackish. T4 with 1 pair of lateral marginal bristles. ST5 with deep median cleft with margins almost parallel and with pilosity. Cercus straight in lateral view, with pointed obliquely cut apex and dorsal subapical barb. Cercus with bristles ventrally only in distal third. Cerci with distal third as broad as middle part in posterior view; parallel. Pregonite with expanded base and sudden narrowing at apex; unicolorous. Postgonite with expanded base, gradually narrowing to apex; unicolorous. Distiphallus with smooth ventroapical margin, a lateroapical furrow, rounded apex and sinuous dorsal outline. Vesica symmetrical, with rounded median projection of main branch and lateral lobes; distal lobes well developed, with filaments, tapering, sclerotized, with spines only on ventral surface.
Remarks. Lopes (1946b) reported that even in specimens from the same colony, post-sutural dorsocentral bristles could be present in variable numbers: 3 or 4, the first three bristles being equidistant, with or without an additional and smaller bristle among them. See also remarks under O. augusta . The female of O. grandis has an undivided T7 ( Tibana & Mello 1985).
Distribution. NEOTROPICAL. Brazil (Amazonas, Paraná , Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo), Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.
Biology. This species has been reared under laboratory conditions by Lopes (1973b), who did not provide further information on its development. It has been collected from human feces, pig carcasses, chicken viscera and fish heads ( Lopes 1973b; Ramírez-Mora et al. 2012; Vairo et al. 2014). Yepes-Gaurisas et al. (2013), in a study on the synanthropy of Sarcophagidae from Colombia, reported the attraction of O. grandis principally to chicken viscera and collected specimens in both rural and forest areas, even though this species was considered infrequent by those authors.
