Dasymutilla connectens (Cameron)
Sphaerophthalma [ sic.] connectens Cameron, 1895 . Biol. Cent.-Amer., Hym. 2:362. Holotype female, Mexico, Pinos
Altos, Chihuahua (B-H) (No. 15-1045) [BMNH] (examined). (Secondary homonym in Mutilla .). Mutilla eggeri Dalla Torre, 1897 . Cat. Hym. 8:33. N. name. Dasymutilla helva Mickel, 1928 . U. S. Nat. Mus. Bull. 143:259. Holotype female, Phoenix, Arizona, July 25, 1917 (W.
D. Pierce) (No. 40747) [USNM] (examined). Synonymy: Mickel (1965:2).
Diagnosis of Female ( Plate C3N View PLATE 3 ). This species has the apices of the hind femora squarely truncate, with the surface of the outer lobe sulcate. It can be separated from other species having this character by the presence of a scutellar scale, by the longitudinally rugose condition of the pygidium, and the densely clothed dorsum bearing yellow setae.
Male. Unknown.
Distribution. USA (Arizona); Mexico (Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Jalisco, Sonora).
Remarks. This species, uncommon in collections, is known only from the female. It is relatively easy to identify if care is taken at the first couplet of the key. We have examined several dozen specimens.
