Tribe Bembicini

Bembicini Latreille 1802 . Based on Bembex Fabricius [correctly Bembix ] (stem: Bembi -). Originally spelled Bembiciles, latinized to Bembecinae by Fallén 1813.

Taxonomic rank. After being established by Bohart and Menke (1976) the tribal rank of Bembicini within the subfamily Bembicinae (formerly Nyssoninae) has not changed.

Recognition. Bembicini are members of the subfamily Bembicinae , as demonstrated by the following characters: mandibular socket open, mandible not notched externoventrally, scutum without complete notauli, metapleuron with greatly reduced ventral area which separated from the propodeum by sulcus, propodeal sternite absent, claws simple, and female midtibia with two apical spurs.

Bembicini differ from the other tribes of Bembicinae ( Alyssontini and Nyssonini ) in having the following character complex: propodeum dorsolaterally without spines or teeth (with spines or teeth in Alyssontini and Nyssonini ), midcoxae close to each other (widely separated in Nyssonini ), outer apex of hindfemur without spoon shaped lobe (with spoon shaped lobe in Alyssontini and some Nyssonini ), and gastral sternum I with a single ridge which does not bifurcate posteriorly (with a single ridge which forks toward middle of sternum in Alyssontini , and with two ridges diverging posteriorly from between hind coxae in Nyssonini ).

Currently recognized subtribes and genera. The tribe Bembicini includes 62 genera (one of them is fossil) in eight subtribes:
