Lectotype (designated here):— JAPAN. "e Japonia", Thunberg C.P. s.n. [UPS-THUNB 22386] (UPS! Fig. 3). ≡ Cyclobalanopsis acuta (Thunberg) Oersted, Vidensk. Meddel. Naturhist. Foren. Kjøbenhavn View in CoL 18: 78 (1866).

Habitat: Evergreen Forest.
Distribution: This species is commonly distributed in Japan and southern Korea ( Ohashi et al. 2006, 2007), with a very limited distribution in SE China (Guangdong province and Hongkong) ( Deng et al. 2008).
Leaf epidermal features: The abaxial leaf surfaces were covered by platelet wax flake. The epidermal cells of the abaxial surface were flat and polygon-irregular in shape. The appressed lateral attached trichomes (ALA) ( Fig. 5A and B View FIGURE 5 , shown by black arrows) and solitary uniseriate trichomes (U) ( Fig. 5A and B View FIGURE 5 , shown by white arrows) were commonly present on the abaxial surface. The stomata were non-typical cyclocytic type. The stomata size (L × W) is 18.39 ± 0.56 × 16.84 ± 0.56 with the stomatal frequency 808.2 ± 6.8/mm 2.
Observations: Q. acuta is similar to Q. sessilifolia Blume and Q. morii Hayata. It differs from Q. morii in its almost entire leaf margin. It differs from Q. sessilifolia in its elliptic or ovate leaf blade and long petiole of about 2.0– 2.7 cm, compared to the oblong-elliptic to lanceolate-elliptic leaf blade and petiole 0.5–1.0 cm in Q. sessilifolia .
