Type material. Telemiades fides Bell, 1949 was described based on the male holotype and female allotype from Balboa, Canal Zone, Panamá, and the following paratypes: a male from the same locality, a male from Ponte Tapia, Panamá, a female from Lascascadas, Panamá and a male from Presidio, Veracruz, Mexico. The male holotype is deposited at the AMNH and illustrated on Butterflies of America (Warren et al. 2016) with the following labels: / HOLOTYPE / Balboa Canal Zone V.27.1914 Acc: 5690/ G1 753/ Telemiades fides Holotype ♂ Bell/. The female allotype is also deposited at the AMNH and illustrated on Butterflies of America (Warren et al. 2016) with the following labels: / T. Hallinan Balboa, C. Z. Panama Nov. 19.1914 Ac. 5690/ ALLOTYPE / Telemiades fides Allotype ♀ Bell/. These labels will be sent to the curator for the collection.
Diagnosis. FW length: males 16–19 mm (n=24) and females 18–21 mm (n=24). Telemiades fides resembles T. marpesus in size but can be distinguished by the brown ground color and the absence of submarginal dark spots in the FW. Additionally, T. fides occurs at Central America while T. marpesus is only known from the south Brazilian and Argentinian Atlantic Forest. Telemiades fides is distinguished from the remaining species of the “ amphion group” by the following characters: uncus with median–distally projection slightly rounded; valva with a developed distal process, slightly curved inwards and with small spine–like projections on internal margin; fultura inferior distally bifid with distal margin and base concave; lamella antevaginalis with distal margin concave on median region; lamella postvaginalis with lateral margin truncated.
Variation. Some specimens from Candelaria Loxicha, Oaxaca, Mexico have reduced hyaline spots in the FW.
Natural history. Immatures have been reported on Inga spp. and Zygia spp. ( Fabaceae ) ( Janzen & Hallwachs 2009). According to available data, T. fides flies from July to December.
Distribution. T. fides occurs in Central America: Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.
Taxonomic discussion. Evans (1953) treated T. fides as a subspecies of T. amphion . The wing and male genitalia distinguish T. fides from the other species of the “ amphion group”, supporting its validity as a separate species (Warren 2000).
