(no genus) megallus View in CoL ; Beattie, 1976. Rhop. Direct., p. 197.
Telemiades epicaulis [sic] megallus ; Raguso & Llorente, 1997, in González; Dirzo & Vogt (eds). Hist. Nat. Tuxtlas. Inst. Biol., UNAM, p. 290.
Type material. Telemiades megallus Mabille, 1888 was described base on one male [holotype] from Rio San Juan, Colombia, in Otto Staudinger collection. The male holotype is deposited at the ZMHU, where the Staudinger material is housed, and illustrated on Butterflies of America ( Warren et al. 2018), with the following labels: / Origin/ Rio San Juan Columb. Fritsch/ Telem. Megallus ♂ Mab./ Telemiad. Megallus ♂ Mab./ Megallus Mab./.
Diagnosis. FW length: males 17–19 mm (n=5). Telemiades megallus resembles T. squanda and the females of T. choricus but is distinguished by VHW with a white patch covering about half of its posterior surface. Additionally, the internal region of valva has a spine–like developed projection.
Variation. The white patch on VHW varies in color intensity, and in some specimens could be whitish blue.
Distribution. Telemiades megallus occurs in Amazonian forest areas, with records in Panama, Colombia, and French Guiana.
Taxonomic discussion. In the original description, Telemiades megallus Mabille, 1888 was erroneously illustrated as T. misitheus (also described in the same work and illustrated as T. megallus ). Evans (1953: 27, Plate 27) misinterpreted T. megallus as a subspecies of T. epicalus . The drawing of the male genitalia of T. epicalus megallus by Evans (1953) makes it clear that the species being illustrated was T. choricus . This probably happened in view of the similarity between T. choricus females and T. megallus males. Later, Steinhauser (1975, 1989) restored the specific status of T. megallus , describing and detailing the male, and also the male and female of T. choricus . Contrary to what Steinhauser (1975, 1989) wrote, the holotype of T. megallus is a male.
