Bledius mandibularis Erichson, 1840

NOVA SCOTIA: Lunenburg Co.: Backmans Beach, 28.VII.1971, B. Wright, (1, NSMC).

Bledius mandibularis   is newly recorded in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. Its distribution in Atlantic Canada is shown in Fig. 14 View Fig . In North America there are two populations; a coastal one occurring from southern Texas to Massachusetts, and an inland one found in the central regions of the United States, north to southern Manitoba ( Herman 1972). The coastal population is found on bare, moist ground in saline habitats, generally on the leeward side of islands or peninsulas and behind beach dunes ( Herman 1972). Backmans Beach is a small island at the tip of the Second Peninsula in Lunenburg County which is linked to the mainland via a barrier beach. It has six variously sized barrier beach-coastal lagoon areas with associated marshlands and sand flats.
