Chlorotabanus falsiflagellatus View in CoL n. sp.

( Figures 3 View FIGURE 3 A–E)

Type locality: Brazil (AM, Barcelos, Serra do Aracá).

Diagnosis: Medium sized (11.2–13.2 mm), frons converges slightly towards base, D.I. 1.3, antennal flagellum with very elongated basal plate about 3x longer than stylus. Thorax dark brown with orangish (flame colored) pilosity. Abdomen yellowish-brown with dense black hairs on tergites 5, 6 and 7. Hyaline wing, except for the strong darkening on the basal-costal and costal cells; costal vein with orangish bristles.

Description (Holotype Ψ): Body length 12.3 mm ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 A–B); wing length 11.5 mm; wing width 3.6 mm.

Head ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 C): Reddish eyes. Brownish frons with parallel sides converging slightly at base, F.I. 7.4, D.I. 1.3; worn pruinosity (possibly due to fixation), and orangish (flame colored) pilosity. Subcallus, parafacialia, gena and face with pruinosity and pilosity as frons. Palpus yellow with orangish hairs. Proboscis with yellowish-brown theca and dark brown labella. Antenna ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 D) with yellow scape and pedicel, with orangish hairs. Flagellum yellow on proximal half, darkening distally. The proximal region to the basal plate forms a slight dorsal projection. Basal plate very elongated about 3x stylus length; B.P.I. 2.0, Flg.I. 3.2.

Thorax: Scutum and scutellum with orangish-brown integument, grayish pruinosity, with orangish hairs. Slender legs; coxae, trochanters, femora and tibiae greenish-yellow with orangish hairs; fore and mid tibiae with few black hairs; hind tibia with some black hairs on the distal 1/3 (in dorsal view); fore and hind tarsomeres with black hairs dorsally; mid tarsomere with sparse black hairs. Hyaline wing ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 E), except for the basal costal and costal cells that are very darkened (yellowish). Pterostigma yellowish. Veins are yellowish-brown, with evident darkening on the transverse veins. Costal vein with orangish bristles. Alular incision with a strong black spot. Small appendix in the fork of vein R4+5.

Abdomen: Yellowish-brown with orangish pilosity and dense black hairs on tergites 5, 6 and 7.

Variations: Paratypes. Body length 11.2–13.2 mm (X = 12.2 mm, N = 13); wing length 10.5–11.8 mm (X = 11.2 mm, N = 13); wing width 3.2–3.7 mm (X = 3.5 mm, N = 13); F.I. 6.3–7.7 (X = 7.1, N = 13); D.I. 1.2–1.5 (X = 1.3, N = 13); B.P.I. 1.5–2.2 (X = 1.9, N = 13); Flg.I. 2.9–3.3 (X = 3.1, N = 13). Some specimens with greater density of hairs on the hind tibia. Appendix in the fork of vein R4+5 often absent.

Male: Unknown.

Distribution: Brazil (Amazonas), Barcelos.

Holotype Ψ: deposited in INPA, in perfect condition.

Type-material: Holotype. “ BRASIL, Amazonas\ Barcelos, Serra do\ Aracá, 1.100m \ 0º54’35’’N, 63°26’01’’W ” “ vii.2007 \ na luz\ A. Filho” (1Ψ INPA).

Etymology: From Latin falsus = false. Name given because of its similarity with C. flagellatus .

Discussion: Very similar to C. flagellatus , especially in color and elongate basal plate. However, its frontal index is never> 7.7 while that of C. flagellatus is> 8.0. Additional differences are in body size and the proportions and form of the antennal segments.
