2.3. Manipulation of D. gallinae View in CoL
To confirm if the olfactory sensilla were located at the tips of the foreleg tarsi of mites, we varnished the tips of the foreleg tarsi of female mites (VTFM) with blue nail polish ( Fig. 1D View Fig ) to prevent them from perceiving volatiles from fecal extracts. The responses of VTFM to the attractant pheromone and the potential arrestment pheromone (guanine, Aladdin) were compared with those of unvarnished female mites (UM) by Y-tube olfactometer bioassays and filter paper contact bioassays, respectively. We varnished the back of the mites (VBM) with blue nail polish in control to exclude the potential negative impacts of nail polish on the mite.
