Family CIALLUSIIDAE Van Name, 1918

Type genus: Ciallusia Van Name, 1918 (< Pterygascidia Sluiter, 1904 ).

The monotypic family, known only from deeper waters of the Indo-west Pacific ( Kott 2008a), is a family of the Phlebobranchia with many rows of oval non-ciliated perforations in the pharyngeal wall, dorsal languets, internal stomach folds and a cylindrical stalk from the posterior end of the body. It may be related to the Corellidae but the gut is on the left side of the body, the stigmata are not coiled and the fine internal longitudinal stomach folds are unique.

Pterygascidia inversa Monniot C. View in CoL and F., 1991 is said to lack stigmata, thereby implying a relationship with the Ciallusiidae . However, it also lacks the perforated pharyngeal wall characteristic of the latter family and the absence of ciliated epithelium in this specimen is not homologous with its absence in Pterygascidia ( Kott 2008a) View in CoL . The specimen is discussed later (see Corellidae View in CoL ).
