Danothrips theivorus (Karny) View in CoL
Anaphothrips theivorus Karny 1921: 72 View in CoL .
Danothrips dianellae Zhang and Tong 1991: 465 View in CoL . syn. n.
Mirab-balou et al. (2011: 727) listed five Danothrips View in CoL species from China. However, this is now reduced to four species, as a result of the above synonymy that is based on examining the specimens listed below from different parts of China. This species is characterized by completely dark brown antennal segment VI, which is also distinctly pedicellate. Antennal segments I–V are completely pale yellow, and VII–VIII are weakly shaded. The fore wing is distinctly brown at base (including clavus) and bears a fairly long dark cross band across the middle. The postocular chaetotaxy is distinctive in having these setae uniserial.
The male of theivorus View in CoL was unknown to Bhatti (1978: 9), who mentioned that the single male labeled by Karny as theivorus View in CoL actually represents theifolii, and the figure of male terminalia for theivorus View in CoL given by Karny (1921) and Sakimura (1974) also refers to theifolii. The correct male was described subsequently under the name dianellae View in CoL . It is macropterous, with the body similar in color to the female, the abdominal sternites without pore plates, and tergite IX with two pairs of stout and thick thorn-like setae arising from weakly elevated sockets.
Specimens examined. CHINA, Guangdong Province, Shipai, Guangzhou, holotype male of dianellae on Dianella ensifolia , 17.xi.1985, coll. Tong Xiao-li (in South China Agricultural University). Paratypes: 10 females collected with holotype; Huidong Co., 1 male on Dianella ensifolia , 20.iii.1988, coll. Tong Xiao-li. Further material: Guangdong Province, Shipai, Guangzhou, 1 female from D. ensifolia , 17.xi.1985, coll. Tong Xiao-li; Hainan Province, Nada, 2 females, 1 male from M. nana , 24.i.1977, coll. Zhang Wei-qiu.
Distribution. China (Hainan, Guangdong); Indonesia, Java.
