Deraiophorus pinesensis sp. nov.

( Figs 1–4 View Figure 1 View Figure 2 View Figure 3 View Figure 4 )

Material examined

Holotype: Female. New Caledonia, Ile des Pins , Kuto, from wet leaf litter, 23 May 1986. Leg. J. Balogh ( HNHM) . Paratypes, one female in NHMG and four males in HNHM, all with same data as for holotype .

Description of female

Length of idiosoma 700–710 µm, width 510–540 µm (n = 2). Shape of idiosoma pentangular.

Dorsal side ( Figure 1A View Figure 1 ). Anterior horns absent, marginal and dorsal shields fused anteriorly. Marginal setae long (c.50–60 µm) basal one-third pilose, apical part smooth. Posterior setae similar in shape and length to marginal setae (c.55–60 µm). Dorsal and anterior area of marginal shields covered by oval pits. Dorsal setae short (c.18–20 µm) and marginally pilose. Pygidial shield present, without ornamentation and with one pair of pilose setae (c.20 µm). Lateral margins of idiosoma bearing two pairs of projections; the first (anterior) projections bigger than the other, ventral surface bearing prestigmatic part of peritremes.

Ventral side ( Figure 1B View Figure 1 ). Sternal setae St1–St3 short (c.7–9 µm), smooth and needlelike, St4, St5 marginally pilose (c.14–17 µm). St1 placed near anterior margin of sternal shield, St2 at level of central part of coxae II, St3 at level of anterior margin of coxae III, St4 at level of central part of coxae III, St5 near basal margin of genital shield. One pair of lyriform fissures present near St1. Sternal shield smooth, without ornamentation. Ventral shield near coxae IV covered by oval pits, other parts smooth. Most ventral setae short (c.30–33 µm) and pilose, several longer setae on the level of anus longer (c.40–45 µm) and marginally pilose. Shape and length of adanal and postanal setae similar to that of posterior setae. Genital shield scutiform, without process, with small oval pits in lateral regions. Genital shield placed between anterior margin of sternal shield and coxae IIII. Tritosternum with narrow basis, tritosternal laciniae trifurcate, its branches serrate. Stigmata placed near coxae II, ventral part of peritreme V-shaped.

Gnathosoma ( Figure 1C View Figure 1 ). Corniculi horn-like, internal malae smooth and longer than corniculi. Hypostomal setae: h1 (c.84 µm), h2 (c.13 µm) and h3 (c.62 µm) smooth and wide, h4 (c.25 µm) marginally serrate. Apical part of epistome pilose. Fixed digit of chelicerae longer than movable digit and bearing one tooth and a sensillus proximale, movable digit with two teeth, internal sclerotized node present.

Legs. Legs I without claws, all legs with smooth and needle-like, wide and robust and marginally pilose setae ( Figure 2A–D View Figure 2 ).

Description of male

Length of idiosoma 700–710 µm, width 540–600 µm (n = 4). Shape of idiosoma, ornamentation and chaetotaxy of dorsal parts as in female ( Figure 4A View Figure 4 ). Sternal setae (c.25–35 µm) marginally pilose: St1 situated at level of central part of coxae II, St2 at level of anterior margin of coxae III, St3 at level of posterior margin of coxae III, St4 near basal margin of genital shield. Genital shield oval and placed between coxae II and III ( Figure 16 View Figure 16 ). Ventral setae and ornamentation similar to those of female ( Figures 3A View Figure 3 and 4B,C View Figure 4 ). Tritosternum and gnathosoma similar to those of female ( Figures 3B View Figure 3 and 4D View Figure 4 ).

Larva and nymphs

Unknown.

Etymology

The new species was named after the collecting locality.

Remarks

The new species belongs to the Deraiophorus loksaisimilis group, the common characters of this group are the pentangular idiosoma, the presence of two projections (anterior and posterior), while central projection is absent. This group consists of three Neotropical species: D. loksai Hirschmann 1973 , D. loksaisimilis Hirschmann 1973 and D. orghidani Huţu 1987 . The new species has V-shaped peritremes and pilose St4 and St5 setae; in contrast, D. loksai and D. loksaisimilis have S-shaped peritremes and their St4 and St5 are smooth. Setae on pygidial shield in D. orghidani are three times longer than dorsal setae, but these setae are as long as dorsal setae in the new species.
