Material examined

Holotype: female. New Caledonia, Mount Panié , c. 400–500 m above sea level, moss from rock and tree, 2 June 1986. Leg. J. Balogh . Paratypes: female, male, deutonymph in NHMG and female, three males, three deutonymphs in HNHM. Locality and date same as in holotype .

Description of female

Length of idiosoma 680–740 µm, width 440–470 µm (n = 3). Shape of idiosoma triangular, posterior margin rounded.

Dorsal side ( Figures 12A View Figure 12 and 15A View Figure 15 ). Marginal and dorsal shields fused anteriorly. Dorsal shield bearing smooth and needle-like setae (c.30–40 µm) and covered by small

oval pits. Marginal shield with undulate inner margin, marginal setae smooth and needle-like (c.28–30 µm), placed on small protuberances.

Ventral side ( Figures 12B View Figure 12 and 15B View Figure 15 ). All sternal setae short (c.6–8 µm), smooth and needle-like. St1 situated at level of anterior margin of coxae II, St2 at level of central area of coxae II, St3 at level of central area of coxae III, St4 at level of posterior margin of coxae III and St5 placed near basal edges of genital shield. Surface of sternal shield smooth. Pedofossae deep, their surface smooth, furrows for tarsi IV present. Ventral setae anteriorly to anal opening smooth and needle-like (c.48–54 µm), other ventral setae smooth and needle-like (c.33–35 µm), placed on small protuberances. Ventral shield ornamented by oval pits. Genital shield scutiform, without anterior process, its apical surface covered by oval pits, other parts with finely reticulate pattern. Genital shield placed between coxae II and IV. Stigmata situated between coxae II and III, peritremes U-shaped.

Tritosternum ( Figure 12C View Figure 12 ). With narrow basis, tritosternal laciniae divided into one smooth central and two serrate lateral branches.

Gnathosoma ( Figure 12D View Figure 12 ). Corniculi horn-like, internal malae smooth and longer than corniculi. Hypostomal setae h1 Y-shaped (c.18 µm) and smooth, h2 smooth and needle-like (c.12 µm), h3 long (c.36 µm) and needle-like, h4 (c.28 µm) marginally with spines. Epistome marginally serrate ( Figure 12E View Figure 12 ). Fixed digit of chelicerae longer than movable digit, both digits bear one – one short tooth, cheliceral node

present ( Figure 10B View Figure 10 ). Palp trochanter with needle-like setae, other setae on palp smooth.

Legs ( Figure 13A–D View Figure 13 ). Bearing mostly smooth and simple setae, but several setae on legs II and III marginally serrate, the first legs with ambulacral claws.

Description of male

Length of idiosoma 710–740 µm, width 450–460 µm (n = 4). Shape, dorsal aspect of idiosoma same as in female.

Ventral side ( Figure 13E View Figure 13 ). Sternal setae short (c.5–6 µm), smooth and needle-like. St1 situated at level of anterior margin of coxae II, St2 at level of posterior margin of coxae II, St3 and St4 at level of central area of coxae III, St5 near posterior margin of genital shield, St6 at level of anterior margin of coxae IV. One pair of lyriform fissures placed near St1. Surface of sternal shield ornamented by oval pits. Genital shield circular, without sculptural pattern and situated between coxae III. Ventral setation, processes of gnathosoma and legs same as in female.

Description of deutonymph

Length of idiosoma 680–740 µm, width 350–400 µm (n = 4). Shape triangular, with rounded posterior margin.

Dorsal side ( Figure 14A View Figure 14 ). Dorsal shield covered by irregular pits, all setae on dorsal shield smooth and needle-like (c.15–17 µm), marginal setae placed on small platelets, needle-like and smooth (c.13–15 µm).

Ventral side ( Figure 14B View Figure 14 ). Sternal setae short (c.6–7 µm), smooth and needle-like. Surface of sternal shield with several oval pits, caudal part of sternal shield narrow. Ventral shield covered by oval pits and bearing five pairs of smooth and needle-like setae. First pair of setae shorter (c.6 µm) than other setae (c.15–16 µm), one pair of adanal setae smooth and needle-like (c.9 µm). Peritremes mostly straight.

Gnathosoma ( Figure 14C View Figure 14 ). Corniculi horn-like, internal malae smooth, with one apical spine and longer than corniculi. Hypostomal setae h1 Y-shaped (c.22 µm) and smooth, h2 long (c.40 µm), smooth and apically obtuse, h3 short (c.9 µm) and needlelike, h4 (c.13 µm) marginally with two short branches. Epistome marginally serrate. Palp trochanter with one smooth and one marginally serrate setae.
