Genus Medhiama Bordoni, 2002 View in CoL

Medhiama Bordoni, 2002: 663 View in CoL (species included: paupera View in CoL , formosana View in CoL , schawalleri View in CoL ); Bordoni, 2007b: 71 (catalog). Type species: Xantholinus pauper Sharp, 1889: 250 View in CoL , fixed by original designation.

Diagnosis: Medhiama can be distinguished from all other genera within the tribe Xantholinini by the following characters ( Fig. 1): a) body subcylindrical, usually medium sized (5–8 mm), with few relatively larger (8–9 mm); b) head subrectangular, with dense and deep punctures and extensive microsculpture; c) frontal furrow deep and long, anteocular furrow missing; d) labrum bilobed and with a longitudinal groove medially; e) segment III of maxillary palpus longest, last segment slender and obconical; last segment of labial palpus longest; f) gular sutures not fused, separated by the broad gular plate; g) neck narrow, about 1/3 of head width; h) number of punctures in admedian row of pronotum usually more than 10, rarely 4; additional punctures distributed on lateral 1/3 surface; i) antesternal plate with median longitudinal furrow; j) superior line of hypomeron bending toward prosternum before anterior angle of pronotum, but not joining inferior line; k) protibia not dilated, with both apical ctenidium and subapical ctenidia; metatibia only with apical ctenidium; l) elytra bearing numerous rows of punctures; m) aedeagus of variable shape, with a pair of varied parameres.

The distributional ranges of the Medhiama species ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ) reveal that they belong to the faunistic elements of the Asian monsoon region. Most species are distributed in the subtropic monsoon subregion: M. densiceps Bordoni , M. puetzi Bordoni , M. rhododendri Bordoni , M. shanica Bordoni , M. zhengi Bordoni , M. kochi (Bernhauer) , M. nigromagna sp. n., M. xiaolongmenensis sp. n., M. wallstromi Bordoni , M. sichuanica Bordoni , while M. schawalleri Bordoni in the tropic monsoon subregion and two species of M. lanzhouensis Bordoni and M. liupanshanensis sp. n. in temperate monsoon subregion. M. formosana Bordoni is endemic to Taiwan and M. paupera (Sharp) is widely distributed across the total monsoon region.
