Empoasca Walsh, 1862: 149 Type species: Empoasca fabae (Harris, 1841) (The type species was originally listed as Empoasca viridescens Walsh, 1862 , a junior synonym of E. fabae ).

The first use of subgenera in Empoasca was by DeLong (1931), but he did not recognize subgenera in his many subsequent papers on the genus. For a subgeneric diagnosis see Zhang et al (2008) and Liu et al (2011).
