Diagnosis.— Males of E. chitina are characterised by the embolic loop enlarging ectally ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 1 – 13. 1 – 4 ), the tip of embolus (E) coming out of the tegular apophysis (TEGA sensu Bennett 2005) at a right angle ( Figs 9–10 View FIGURES 1 – 13. 1 – 4 ), a palpal tibia rather long and thin ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 1 – 13. 1 – 4 ), a nonRTA palpal tibial apophysis (sensu Bennett 2005) with two small and elongate ctenidia (CT) ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 1 – 13. 1 – 4 ). Females are characterised by the carinate lateral fovea forming a broad median septum (MS) slightly narrowing anteriorly ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 1 – 13. 1 – 4 ), a shallow and inconspicuous atrium (AT) with two small rounded spermathecae (S) touching medially, not always visible through the cuticle ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 1 – 13. 1 – 4 ), and fertilisation ducts (FD) originating apically from the spermathecae (S) ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 1 – 13. 1 – 4 ).

Distribution.— Transcontinental boreal species.

Remark.— Emblyna chitina is morphologically similar to Emblyna peragrata and the two species have been confused in the past. Recent examination of representatives of both species by D.J. Buckle (pers. comm.) shed light on the problem. We have studied the specimens curated at the CNC and our own records (given above) and confirm his findings. This allows us to clarify the distribution of the two species. Emblyna chitina is a widespread boreal species, found from Alaska, British Columbia to Québec, while E. peragrata is restricted to the West Coast of British Columbia. Chamberlin & Gertsch (1958) list "one female, probably this species" from Rousseau Bay, Tchapahipane Is., Québec in the list of localities given for E. peragrata . Fortunately, this record was overlooked by all authors who treated the spiders of Québec as it now appears erroneous. Females, as all female of the Emblyna / Dictyna complex, are especially difficult to distinguish and it is best to consider the record of E. peragrata from Québec by Chamberlin & Gertsch (1958) as a misidentification of E. chitina . Renault (1968) recorded and illustrated a species from New Brunswick under the name Dictyna near peragrata . Most likely, he was also referring to E. chitina .
