Description. Male: Length, 41 mm. Form large, broad, slightly tapering posteriorly; integument ochraceous; head, antennae and legs reddish-brown; venter of head, mandibles, antennal segments 2–4 (except for apices), fore- and mesocoxae, mesosternum, mesepisternum, mesepimeron, posterior ½ of metasternum, posterior ¾ of metepisternum, and apices of abdominal segments 1–4 dark reddish-brown to black, pronotum with disc spotted with brown to dark reddish-brown maculae. Head above glabrate, finely punctate at base, bicarinate between eyes; palpi with apical segment of labial and maxillary pair subtruncate, impressed dorsally; genae glabrate, sparsely punctate; antennal tubercles broad, slightly elevated, apices obtusely angulate; antennae exceeding elytral apices by about 2 segments, slightly expanded externally, scape reddish-brown, nitid, finely punctate, apical 2/3 of dorsum canaliculate, segments 2–4, nitid, finely punctate, apex of segments 2–4 lighter reddish-brown, laterally carinate from segments 3–11, dorsal surface with deep longitudinal impression (canaliculate) on apical ½ of 3rd, dorsal surface of 4th vaguely canaliculate, segments from apical ¾ of 4th, opaque, densely punctate, clothed with very short, appressed pubescence, 3rd segment longer than 1st, 4th shorter than 3rd, 5th–7th successively longer than 4th, each segment from 8th–10th subequal and longer than 7th; 11th longest, curvate. Pronotum broader than long (1.6 x as broad as long), sides with prominent lateral tubercle, disc densely, contiguously punctate with a reddish-brown glabrate spot at middle of posterior half, and three maculae on each side, a pair of dark brownish maculae on both sides antemedially and postmedially, and another pale brown macula in a depression on the outside of the postmedial maculae, base shallowly impressed, surface nitid, finely punctate; prosternum densely, contiguously punctate, rather sparsely clothed with short erect hairs, intercoxal process arcuate and abruptly declivous at apex; mesosternum dark reddish brown, darker adjacent to coxal cavity, intercoxal process flat, not projected below base of coxae, anterior face concave; sides clothed with whitish, depressed pubescence; metasternum dark brownish except around mid-coxae and apex yellowish, shining, finely, densely punctate, densely pubescent with suberect, yellowish hair, metepisternum broad, blackish except for yellowish macula at base, finely densely punctate, densely pubescent with appressed hair. Scutellum triangular, as long as wide, ochraceous, glabrate, acutely pointed apically. Elytra about 2 times longer than broad, distinctly margined laterally; surface rather coarsely, confluently punctate at base, densely but less coarsely punctate behind; apices obliquely truncate, broadly rounded to suture. Legs with hind femora not attaining elytral apices, sparsely pubescent, surface rugulose, striate near apex of dorsum, rather coarsely striate punctate on venter. Abdomen shining, densely clothed with short golden, suberect hairs, and with depressed pubescent laterally; first sternite rather abruptly depressed around base of coxal cavity; 5th sternite rounded, emarginate at apex.
Female: Unknown.
Etymology. This species is named after an avid collector of Cerambycidae, Mr. James Wappes for making this unique specimen available for examination.
Type. Holoype, male, Guatemala: Baja Verapaz, Purulha, Dec 1991, J. Monzon (1 male, ACMT). Holotype deposited at USNM per request of J. Wappes.
Note. This species resembles Crioprosopus nieti Chevrolat in overall appearance without the vittae on elytra. The antennal segments of C. wappesi are only slightly expanded externally compared to C. nieti with apices of segments expanded and strongly angulated. The ventral surfaces of the femora are more coarsely striate-punctate in C. wappesi compared to C. nieti . The first abdominal segment is more abruptly depressed around the base of coxal cavity in C. wappesi . The head, scape, femora and sternum are reddish-brown in C. wappesi compared to black in C. nieti .
