Smicridea (Rhyacophylax) flinti sp. nov.

Figs 26–30 View FIGURES 26 – 27 View FIGURES 28 – 31

Adult male. Forewing length 3.73–3.93 mm (n = 6). Color in alcohol gray, setae on frontal region of head gray (in older preserved specimens, dark yellow). Antennae and legs yellow-gray. Forewings gray, each with darker areas along transverse veins; nigma and thyridial spots dark; irregular, transverse white band subapically; and translucent spot in middle of wing ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 26 – 27 ). Anterolateral glandular processes of sternum V slender distally and with length (0.41 mm) surpassing distal region of this segment ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 26 – 27 ).

Male genitalia. Segment IX, in lateral view, with posterodorsal projection forming rounded lobe ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ); in dorsal view lateral, anterior margin nearly straight, covered by small spikes ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ). Tergum X triangular in lateral view, its ventrolateral margins sclerotized, divided mesally for full length, dorsolateral surfaces with moderately long setae, apices blunt with short setae ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ). Inferior appendages 2-segmented; basal segment long, with distal region enlarged and covered by long setae; distal segment short, about 1/3 as long as basal segment, apex rounded, in dorsal and lateral views ( Figs 28, 29 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ). Phallus tubular, enlarged basal section of phallobase forming angle of about 80º with median section; apical 2/3 straight, with upward apical projection in lateral view ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ), slightly expanded apically in dorsal view ( Figs 30, 31 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ); phallus expanded with 2 sclerotized, elongated processes apically, distal ends of these processes expanded laterally in lobular shape; these sclerites triangular in ventral view when phallus retracted ( Figs 28, 30, 31 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ). Internal sclerotized portion of ejaculatory duct nearly ½ as long as phallobase ( Fig. 28 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ); apically divided longitudinally in ventral view ( Figs 30, 31 View FIGURES 28 – 31 ); dorsal periphalic membranes absent.

Female and immatures. Unknown.

Diagnosis. The male of S. flinti sp. nov. differs from those of the other species described in the subgenus by having an expanded phallus with 2 sclerotized, elongated subapical processes ventrolaterally, the distal ends of these processes expanded laterally in a lobular shape; when the phallus is retracted, in ventral view, these sclerites are triangular in shape. The apex of the internal sclerotized region of the ejaculatory duct, in lateral view, is divided medially for most of its length.

Biology. Specimens of S. flinti sp. nov. were collected with light traps placed over 2 streams, 1 in the state of Amazonas, 12.5 m in width, with black water, rocky bottom and loose stones in terra firme (unflooded upland) forest, with partial canopy; the other in the state of Mato Grosso, 4 m in width, with preserved gallery forest in the Cerrado biome.

Distribution. Brazil, Amazonas and Mato Grosso States.

Etymology. The name flinti is in honor of Dr. Oliver S. Flint, Jr., in recognition of his great contributions to the knowledge on the Neotropical Trichoptera .
