Priotomis rana Townes, 1970: 293 View in CoL , 488. Description, figure, distribution. Holotype Ƥ at AEIC; Yu & Horstmann, 1997: 284. Listed.
Description. Female. Medium size; fore wing length 0.95 cm.
Head. Mandible 2.17 as long as basal width; clypeus 2.22 as wide as high, entirely finely punctate; supraclypeal area entirely densely punctate, densely pilose; antenna with 27 flagellomeres; white band starting at flagellomere 6, reaching flagellomere 11; flagellum cylindrical, subapical flagellomeres as wide as basal flagellomeres; supra-antennal area ventrally slightly concave, densely punctulate, sparsely pilose, medially with longitudinal sulcus; gena and vertex behind ocelli punctulate, sparsely pilose; occipital carina weak, dorsally absent, not reaching hypostomal carina, ending far from mandible base; malar space 1.07 as long as basal width of mandible.
Mesosoma . Densely pilose, in dorsal view 2 as long as wide, in lateral view middle width 0.29 cm; pronotum posteriorly strigate; collar punctate; pronotal sulcus corrugated, densely pilose; Scuto-scutellar groove weakly corrugated; scutellum 1.09 as long as wide, scarcely punctate; hind margin of metanotum with two lateral teeth; mesopleuron entirely strigate; mesopleural groove widely corrugated; epicnemial carina weak, dorsally slightly curved forwards; dorsal end of epicnemial carina reaching more than 0.3 of posterior margin of pronotum; sternaulus absent at posterior 0.6, not corrugated; mesopleural fovea deeply impressed, forming pit; mesosternum punctate and strigulate; median portion of posterior transverse carina of mesothoracic venter very short, convex; transverse furrow at base of propodeum laterally 0.09 as long as anterior portion of propodeum, very weakly corrugated, almost smooth, deep and narrow; propodeum 1.26 as long as wide medially; anterior margin with two vestigial lateral teeth; anterior portion of propodeum finely strigulate; posterior portion of propodeum entirely strongly strigate, posteriorly with two divergent longitudinal carinae; anterior transverse carina of propodeum incomplete, medially interrupted, weak; propodeal spiracle 0.82 as wide as long; pleural carina of propodeum absent; lower division of metapleuron strigulate, sparsely pilose; juxtacoxal carina absent.
Figures 10–11. Priotomis rana Townes , male. 10, Habitus; 11, Dorsal view. Photographed by Berthil B. Longo.
Wings. Fore wing: vein 2+3Rs almost straight; vein 1M+Rs uniformly curved; vein 1cu-a straight, angle with vein M+Cu about 90°; vein 2-Cu 0.69 as long as vein 2cu-a; vein 4Rs 0.72 as long as vein 4-M, sinuous; cell 1+2Rs 0.81 as high as pterostigma, rectangular, vein 2-M 4.40 as long as vein 3-M. Hind wing: vein 1-Cu 1.17 as long as vein cu-a; vein 2-1A reaching 0.43 of distance to posterior margin.
Metasoma. T1 0.49 as long as hind femur, minutely coriarious, with scarce coarse punctures; spiracle at anterior 0.71, not prominent in dorsal view; postpetiole dorsoanteriorly slightly depressed; T2–8 minutely coriarious, densely pilose; T2 0.77 as long as wide at apex; apex of T2 2.14 as wide as base; ovipositor sheath 0.25 as long as hind tibia; dorsal valve with 6 teeth; ventral valve with 9 widely spaced teeth.
Color. Dark brown and orange with yellow marks; metasoma ferruginous (195,092,042). Head: dark brown (232,188,108); flagellum at f6–10 whitish. Mesosoma : dark brown (124,082,058) with the following pale yellow marks: tegula, scutellum, postscutellum laterally, subalar ridge, mesopleuron ventrally opposite to mesepimeron, upper division of metapleuron laterally, dorsal half of lower division of metapleuron, and two spots at posterior portion of propodeum. Legs: mostly dark brown; mid coxa and hind coxa dorsally, hind trochanters, and basal 0.1 of hind femur, orange (221,126,036); all tibiae, all t1–t3, bright yellow (244,231,204). Metasoma: mostly ferruginous; T1 yellowish at basal 0.2–0.6. Ovipositor sheath ferruginous.
Variation. Antenna completely white at f7–9, dorsally white at f6 and f10–11; malar space near hind margin of eye with a small yellow spot; face with lateral, very thin stripes opposite to antennal sockets; scutellum almost entirely yellow, except centrally brownish.
Male. (Figs 10, 11) Similar to female, except for showing the following: supraclypeal area sparsely pilose; antenna with 25 flagellomeres, white band starting at f9, reaching f11; supra-antennal area ventrally strongly concave; gena and vertex behind ocelli densely pilose; occipital carina strong; collar strigulate; epicnemial carina strong; lower division of metapleuron strigate, densely pilose; spiracle of T1 prominent in dorsal view; postpetiole dorsolaterally slightly depressed. Dark tones at body black instead of very dark brown; postscutellum entirely black; all yellow tones very pale, especially at legs, almost whitish; hind femur basally ventrally orange; T1 entirely black, only lateral yellow at spiracle; T2 and T3 black, T4–8 brown.
Comments. This is the only know species with the anterior transverse carina of propodeum medially interrupted, the mesoscutum without yellow stripes, and with two lateral teeth at the hind margin of mesopleuron and anterior margin of propodeum. Color pattern of mesosoma similar to P. vinhai , sp. nov., from which it can be differentiated by the face entirely black (vs. profusely marked with yellow in P. vinhai ), and the pronotum and mesoscutum entirely black (vs. with yellow stripes).
