Diagnosis. Agnosthaetus brouni may be reliably distinguished from all other species of Agnosthaetus , except A. tumidus , A. bicolor , and A. zonatus , by the combination of dorsum of head distinctly punctate ( Fig. 12 View Figs ) and with distinct subocular band of microsculpture ( Fig. 63 View Figs , bm), lack of microsculpture on dorsal sides of head and thorax, smooth mentum (as in Fig. 67 View Figs ), complete lateral pronotal sulcus ( Fig. 78 View Figs , ls) and carina ( Fig. 79 View Figs , pc), metathoracic pleural ridge absent (e.g., Figs. 85–86 View Figs ), apex of male labrum with broad, well-defined emargination (without larger medial tooth), and apex of female labrum with distinctly larger medial tooth ( Fig. 113 View Figs ). From A. tumidus , A. bicolor , and A. zonatus , the aedeagus of A. brouni may be distinguished by the combination of apical part of median lobe without subparallel ridges near base ( Fig. 125 View Figs , arrow, cf. Fig. 134 View Figs , arrow), paramere in dorsal view with apical part concave mesially ( Fig. 121 View Figs , arrow), and the basal sclerite of internal sac broadly U-shaped and with arms gradually diverging ( Fig. 195 View Figs , arrow).

Description. Color: Variable, usually reddish brown, and with segment VI (and frequently the elytra) darker to nearly black. Head: Frontal ridge present (cf. Fig. 12 View Figs , fr). Dorsum moderately densely punctate; with punctures distributed evenly over surface, but occasionally absent from middle part. Punctures deep, but indistinctly defined; diameter up to 2X diameter of eye facet; interpuncture dis- tance mostly much less than half puncture diameter ( Fig. 12 View Figs ). Dorsal microsculpture absent. Dorsal tentorial sulcus (cf. Figs. 10–11 View Figs , dt) distinctly slit-like; width subequal to or less than puncture diameter. Sublongitudinal ridge (cf. Fig. 10 View Figs , sr) distinct; not confused by smaller carinae or punctures; crest at antennal tubercle without distinct microsculpture. Area above and behind antennoocular carina ( Figs. 10–11 View Figs , arrow) more or less smooth, without subsidiary carinae, or with single subsidiary carina formed by confluent punctures. Antenno-ocular carina joining eye at or behind middle ( Fig. 12 View Figs , ao). Temple ( Fig. 11 View Figs , tm) short, less than 50% EYL. Subocular surface with narrow well-demarcated band of microsculpture ( Fig. 63 View Figs , bm). Labrum distinctly sexually dimorphic ( Fig. 113 View Figs ). Apical labral margin in males strongly emarginate medially, evenly dentate, with 18–26 teeth (n =7), all teeth normal, projecting more or less anteriorly. Apical labral margin in females broadly convex, not emarginate medially; with 21–25 teeth (n =13), with medial tooth elongate, twice length of others. Adoral labral surface in males smooth, without subapical transverse ridge. Mandible more or less identical in both sexes; males and females with single, mesially directed tooth, males with distinct preapical spur (cf. Fig. 190 View Figs , arrow) or with weakly developed preapical spur (cf. Fig. 190 View Figs , arrow); females without spur. Prothorax ( Fig. 78–79 View Figs View Figs ): Pronotum without microsculpture. Medial pronotal sulci anteriorly separate from and terminating posterior to anterior punctures ( Fig. 78 View Figs ). Distance between medial sulci slightly greater posteriorly. Pronotal basolateral carina absent ( Fig. 78 View Figs ). Anterior pronotal puncture (cf. Fig. 70 View Figs , ap) absent or indistinct; medial puncture (cf. Fig. 70 View Figs , mu) distinct; basal puncture ( Fig. 70 View Figs , bu) absent. Medial pronotal seta subequidistant from medial and lateral sulci ( Fig. 78 View Figs ). Pronotal hypomeron ( Fig. 24 View Figs , hy) shiny, without microsculpture. Prosternum without microsculpture. Pterothorax: Elytron ( Fig. 23 View Figs , e) without microsculpture; without punctiform, non-setiferous impressions,or with small, punctiform, non-setiferous impressions; with 2 macrosetae, not set in punctures; laterally with single ridge (cf. Fig. 24 View Figs , ek). Mesothoracic epimeral region ( Fig. 24 View Figs , mer) shiny, without microsculpture. Metathoracic pleural region ( Fig. 24 View Figs , m) shiny, without microsculpture. Metathoracic pleural ridge absent; metathoracic pleural groove ( Fig. 24 View Figs , gr) complete, continuing to or near to pleurocoxal articulation. Abdomen: Abdominal vestiture short, somewhat appressed, dorsally with radiating fans of setae either side of midline and laterally, or more or less evenly projecting posteriorly but with middle setae directed posteromedially. Abdominal sternite V of male with large diffuse patch of coarser setae medially. Aedeagus ( Fig. 121 View Figs ): “ Type A” (see description on p. 8). Apical part of median lobe distinctly trilobate, with rounded lateral lobes, with abruptly distinct, broadly acuminate, and sharply pointed apicomedian lobe. Both apicolateral and apicomedial setae short ( Fig. 125 View Figs ). Paramere extending to about level of median lobe apex; lamellate, in lateral view distinctly broad along most of length; with apical part curving ventrally; in dorsal view with outer side gently convex; with 4 large setae near inner edge of apex; internal sac as in Fig. 195 View Figs .

Distribution. ( Map 3 View Map 3 ). North Island: AK; CL; ND; TK; WO.

Biology and Ecology. Habitat: Agathis , Nothofagus , and podocarp forest. Specimens have been taken mostly from forest leaf litter. Phenology: year-round. Elevation: 16– 540 m.

Remarks. The name Dimerus brouni Broun , which was overlooked by subsequent authors (e.g., Scheerpeltz 1933; Bernhauer 1939; Herman 2001), is available because Broun (1910) provided a valid description of this species while comparing it to his new species, Dimerus stilbus . The discovery of this name and its transfer here to Agnosthaetus complicates the nomenclature of the type species of Agnosthaetus ( Agnosthaetus brouni Bernhauer ), which, as the junior secondary homonym, is here given a replacement name (for further details, see Etymology under A. brounides , p. 21). Although the Broun name is available, it cannot be firmly established which of the seven BMNH specimens labeled as Dimerus brouni (or by abbreviation D. b.) were studied by Broun when he wrote his description. Designation of a lectotype is particularly important here, as there are several externally indistinguishable New Zealand species resembling the BMNH D. brouni material, and two of the candidate syntype specimens lack specific locality details. The lectotype matches the original description, and is from an area of northern New Zealand where only this species occurs. Thus, selection of this species fixes the type locality (Hunua, Drury) and the application of this otherwise problematic name. The two paralectotype specimens (FMNH-INS 0000 048 425 and 426) appear to belong to a series and have identical data; the female was likely the one Broun described as having sent to A. Fauvel, who allegedly ( Broun 1912) recognized it as belonging to a new genus, Dimerus . Broun attributed Dimerus , as he used it, to Fauvel, and this is not the same as Dimerus Fiori (now a junior generic synonym in Pselaphinae ). Two specimens in BMNH, while conspecific with the lectotype, are excluded from the type series as they have recorded collecting dates later than 1910, and thus Broun could not have seen them when describing D. brouni . Broun describes D. stilbus and D. brouni as differing in mandibular dentition, and since the first paralecto- type specimen has its mandibles closed, that specimen was excluded as a possible lectotype candidate. Nevertheless, although there still remains some doubt surrounding that specimen, the existence of a label with some descriptive text (only “coarse punctation” can be discerned) in Broun’ s handwriting is sufficient to consider it part of the type series.

Agnosthaetus brouni is one of a group of several species (including A. tumidus , A. zonatus , and A. bicolor ) that may be reliably distinguished only by comparing characters of the aedeagus (paramere and median lobe shape, internal sac sclerites), as given in the diagnoses and identification key.
