( Figs. 2 A–E View FIGURE 2 ; 3 A–C View FIGURE 3 ; 4 A–G View FIGURE 4 ; 5 A–E View FIGURE 5 ; 6 A–E View FIGURE 6 )

Diagnosis. Male. Only extant species of Atrichopogon with pigmented wings in the Neotropical region with gonostylus not forked, spatulate in distal 2/3, with distinct middle notch and quadratic apex. Female. Without good characteristic features: wing with two distinct darker spots; flagellomeres 1–8 more darker than flagellomeres 9–13; genitalia medium brown; spermatheca single, without neck, small and ovoid.

Male. Head brown ( Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 ); head width/mouth part length 2.60–2.90 (2.75, n = 2). Ommatidia with interfacet pubescence; broadly abutting medially for length of 3.00–3.40 (3.2, n = 2) ommatidia ( Fig. 2D View FIGURE 2 ). Antenna medium brown, proportions of flagellomeres as in Figure 2B View FIGURE 2 ; flagellomeres 2–10 fused; flagellomeres 1–9 dark brown with well-developed plumes; 10–13 medium brown without plume setae; 9th flagellomere 0.65 times shorter than flagellomere 10; flagellomere 13 with apical projection slightly constricted basally.AR 0.92 (0.92, n = 2). Palpus medium brown ( Figs. 2C, E View FIGURE 2 ); third segment short to moderately elongated, swollen at mid-length, with well-developed subapical pit; segments 4 and 5 separate. PRIII 2.60 (2.60, n = 2).

Thorax dark brown ( Fig. 3B View FIGURE 3 ). Scutum with setae arising directly from surface, with lateral suture. Paratergite with one seta. Anepisternum well-developed, broadly bilobed posteriorly. Wing ( Fig. 3A View FIGURE 3 ) with patch of pigmentation in area of r-m and posterior to apex of R 3; few macrotrichiae on membrane in apical portion of r 3, m 1; wing length 0.80–0.82 (0.81, n = 2) mm. CR 0.63 (0.63, n = 2). Halter pale. Legs yellow brown ( Fig. 3C View FIGURE 3 ); coxae, trochanter, and basal portion of femora lighter; hind tibial spur shorter than width of hind tibia, hind tibial comb with 9 spines. TRI 3.07 (n = 1), TRII 3.15 (n = 1), and TRIII 2.57 (n = 1); empodia present.

Abdomen brown ( Fig. 4A View FIGURE 4 ). Segments 1-6 with lateral dark marks. Terminalia dark brown, large ( Figs. 4B, C View FIGURE 4 ); tergite 9 about 2.5 × as broad as long, not extending to apex of gonocoxite; sternite 9 stout, sub-trapezoidal, with proximal margin broadly concave, distal margin with a row of stout spines ( Fig. 4C View FIGURE 4 ). Gonocoxite without medial lobe; length 1.80–2.00 (2,80, n = 2) × basal width. Gonostylus ( Fig. 4D View FIGURE 4 ) with 1/3 proximal side stout; distal 2/3 spatulate; concave with a distinct middle notch, gently curved; apex quadratic, with a discrete concavity in the distal lateral tip; outer tip rounded; inner tip pointed. Aedeagal-parameral complex nearly quadrangular, 2 × as broad as long ( Figs. 4 View FIGURE 4 E-G); with curved, sclerotized lateral arms; subapical portion with two lateral triangular teeth-like, and two lateral thin spiniform projections in the centre. Cercus triangular, not reaching the apex of tergite 9.

Female. Similar to male. Head ( Fig. 5A View FIGURE 5 ); head width/mouthpart length 2.50–2.70 (2.6, n = 2). Eyes broadly abutting medially for length of 2.80–3.00 (2.9, n = 2) ommatidia ( Fig. 5C View FIGURE 5 ). Antenna with flagellomeres 1–8 dark brown ( Fig. 5B View FIGURE 5 ); 9–13 medium brown. AR 1.23–1.26 (1.24, n = 2). Mandibles well developed; teeth not visible. Palpus medium brown ( Fig. 5D View FIGURE 5 ); third segment short to moderately elongated ( Fig. 5E View FIGURE 5 ), pit at mid-length; segments 4 and 5 separate. PRIII 2.20–2.40 (2.3, n = 2). Thorax dark brown ( Fig. 6B View FIGURE 6 ). Wing ( Fig. 6A View FIGURE 6 ) pattern of pigmented membrane as for male; macrotrichiae on membrane in apical portion of r 3, m 1, and apical half of M 1. Wing length 0.85–0.90 (0.87, n = 2) mm. CR 0.62 (0.62, n = 2). Legs as shown in figure 6C. Abdomen brown ( Fig. 6D View FIGURE 6 ); cercus light brown. Genitalia. One medium brown, small, ovoid, sclerotized spermatheca ( Fig. 6E View FIGURE 6 ), measuring 85 × 70 (n = 1) μm, without visible neck.

Type material. Holotype, adult male, slide-mounted, labelled as follows: BRAZIL, Amazonas, Presidente Figueiredo, Rio Pardo , 1°49ʹ02.3″ S 60°19ʹ03.5″ W, CDC light trap, Ramal Gusmão, canopy, forest, Pereira-Silva J. Col. VII. 2015 ( INPA) GoogleMaps . Allotype, adult female, slide-mounted, same data as holotype ( INPA) GoogleMaps . Paratypes: 1 male and 1 female, same data as holotype ( ILMD) GoogleMaps .

Etymology. This species is named and described in honor of Jansen Fernandes de Medeiros, a close friend of the authors, medical entomologist, dedicated chairperson, and laboratory leader, who enthusiastically promotes entomological research on biodiversity in the Amazon basin and is largely responsible for the growth and development of another Amazonian FIOCRUZ Unit in Porto Velho, Rondônia.
