Remarks. Pseudohauerina involuta ( Cushman 1946) has a compressed, involute test with an acute periphery, quinqueloculine or sigmoiline juvenile stage and planispiral adult chamber arrangement. The chambers are slightly inflated and distinct with depressed sutures and have walls with numerous radial ridges that sometimes curve and flare slightly towards the periphery. The aperture consists of a slightly protruding trematophore ( Fig. 13 :19–21; 14:1–4). Although these features are somewhat similar to Hauerina occidentalis Cushman 1946 , P. involuta is differentiated by its less inflated chambers, more irregular chamber arrangement and coarser ornament that often creates a ‘knobbed’ peripheral margin. This species also differs from Hauerina orientalis Cushman 1946 by being involute, having a thicker test and curved radial ridges.

Early reports of this species by Brady (1884) from the Admiralty Islands at depths of 29–46 m under Hauerina ornatissima ( Kärrer 1868) were later referred to H. involuta by Cushman (1946). When Cushman (1924) recorded Samoan specimens as H. ornatissima he noted that it had a tropical Indo-Pacific distribution with occurrences in Fiji , Papua New Guinea, Mauritius, Admiralty Islands , Ceylon , Funafuti, Kerimba Archipelago, Gasper Straits , Hawaii, Malay, Jamaica, Tortugas and Phillipines. When Cushman (1946) erected H. involuta based on material from the Admiralty Islands and Marshall Islands, he noted the likelihood that many Pacific specimens previously assigned H. ornatissima were actually P. involuta . Loeblich & Tappan (1987) reported specimens of P. involuta from the GBR originally described by Ponder (1972). Hatta & Ujiié (1992b) reported P. involuta from the Coral Seas between Ishigaki and Iriomote Islands within the southwestern Ryukyu Island Arc . Based on material collected at a depth of 146 m from the Western Timor Sea and 75 m north of Cape Londonderry, northern Western Australia, Loeblich & Tappan (1994) published this taxon as Sigmoihauerina involuta (Cushman) , presumably due to the sigmoiline chamber arrangement found in the juvenile specimens. As the adult forms of P. involuta are planispiral in chamber arrangement and can be either sigmoiline or quinqueloculine in juvenile forms, Loelich and Tappan’s (1994) assignation is not considered appropriate. Haig (1997) published this species from the Exmouth Gulf without illustration as S. involuta . Inspection of the specimens for Parker’s (2009) published material confirms his synonymy along with his own description of P. involuta from Ningaloo Reef. Debenay (2012) reported specimens from the southwestern lagoon of New Caledonia at depths ranging between 0–40 m.

Distribution within study area. Pseudohauerina involuta is almost entirely restricted to the lagoons of One Tree Reef where it is especially abundant at site 53 in Lagoon 2 and site 39 Lagoon 1. This taxon was also collected from site 1 of Wistari Lagoon, sites 8, 22 and 37 in Heron Lagoon and site 6 and 8 from Transect 3, Heron Reef flat. It was not found in the channel sample or Sykes Reef.
