2012 Siphoniferoides siphoniferus (Brady) ; Debenay, p. 93, pl. 2.

Description. See Brady (1881; p. 53, pl. 42, figs 25–29), Cushman (1924; p. 13, pl. 4, figs 4, 5) and Parker (2009; p. 39, Fig. 32a–h).

Remarks. Specimens were attributed to this species based on the free, subcylindrical tapering test and numerous distinctly large, fistulose chambers arranged in rows (~6–8) that run longitudinally along the length of the test. Initial chamber arrangement is triserial becoming biserial with round, open fistulae ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 :4).

Some descriptions of this taxon report distinct, but enclosed fistulae ( Brady 1881; Cushman 1924; Loeblich & Tappan 1985), however it is more common to find the test with open fistulae and external apertures. All specimens retrieved from the study area possessed open, short fistulae.

Siphoniferoides siphonifera ( Brady 1881) View in CoL distribution is largely from the Indo-Pacific region (Admiralty Islands, Sandwich Islands, Hawaii from 29–72 m—Brady 1884; Blake Reef, Southern Japan, Philippines— Cushman 1924; Sahul Shelf, Timor Sea—Lobelich & Tappan 1985; in open estuaries and inner shelf sediments from Bass Strait—Yassini & Jones, 1995; muddy lagoons of Papua New Guinea—Strotz 2008; Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia—Parker 2009; southwestern lagoon of New Caledonia from 45–590 m—Debenay 2012).

Distribution within study area. Siphoniferoides siphonifera was collected from all reefs except for Sykes Reef. It is interesting to note, that like Textularia jparkeri n. sp., S. siphonifera was on average only found in small numbers of between one to three specimens, but at site 50 in One Tree Lagoon 2 and the channel sample between Wistari and Heron Reefs, specimen numbers are four times this average. Previously reported depths plus those reported here support the idea that S. siphonifera prefers tropical habitats below 10 m depth.
