Body elongated; greatest depth contained 3.2 to 4.1, and caudal peduncle depth 9.3 to 10.5 times in SL; head length 4.0 to 4.3, predorsal distance 2.1 to 2.3, caudal peduncle length 8.6 to 10.5 in SL; snout length 2.4 to 2.6, horizontal orbital diameter 3.2 to 3.9 and least interorbital width 2.1 to 2.8. Mouth terminal; premaxilla and dentary with 4 teeth, no maxillary teeth. Lateral line with 37-41 pored scales; transverse series above lateral line with 4-5½ scale rows and below with 4-5½ scale rows. Dorsal fin with 11 or 12, pectoral fin with 15-17, pelvic fin with 9, anal fin with 10 and caudal fin with 19 rays. Ground color silvery to yellowish; superior region of orbit red; three dark-brown rounded or oval, horizontaly elongated, blotches on flank; region of contact between flank scales below lateral line with orange or red spots, forming longitudinal series. Fins yellowish ( Graça, Pavanelli, 2007).
Maximum standard length. 370.0 mm ( Graça, Pavanelli, 2007).
Distribution. Drainages of Surinam, Amazon basin and Paraná-Paraguay system.
