The name Megaderus was used by Rafinesque (1815: 231) for Muraenidae (Pisces) as a name in the index of a catalogue and later by Dejean (1821: 106) for a cerambycid without a description and with ambiguity surrounding the epithet “ stigma . ” Since both names were published without author, they are considered nomina nuda.

Germar (1824: 501) was the first author who published description of Megaderus (Megaderi) and listed C. stigma . According to article 11.8.1 of the ICZN a genus-group proposed in Latin text but written otherwise than in the nominative singular it is to be corrected to the nominative singular (ICZN, 1999). Therefore, the correct form is Megaderus and should be reinstated.
