Omalaspis carinata ( Kieffer, 1901) , species dubia

Tavaresia carinata Kieffer, 1901: 160

Omalaspis carinata (Kieffer) , Weld, 1952: 168–9

The type material of O. carinata is lost ( Fergusson, 1986: 32). We have inquired with MNHN-Paris, NHM, HNHM and CAS for this type material and it has not been found. This species was originally described from France. Fergusson (1986) mentioned the following: “ a single specimen in theMNH fits Kieffer’s description, specially “Differé de toutes par le thorax rouge …” ”, but this coloration character is not valid to separate the species of Omalaspis . Kieffer’s description is incomplete and does not give enough characters to differentiate O. carinata from all the other Omalaspis species , so we have to consider this species as ‘ species dubia ’ until the type material is found and studied. This species is presumably lost; however, Kieffer material, including specifically from the year 1901, is chaotically scattered and could indeed turn up at unexpected locations.
