Description: Body strongly compressed, flattened, oval in shape; up to 150 cm, usually less than 70 cm; eyes on the left side; border of the preoperculum free, not obscured by skin or scales; pectoral fins on both sides of body, with branched rays; pelvic fins on both sides of body, with 5–6 rays, bases short and symmetrical or nearly so; dorsal and anal fins not joined to the caudal fin ( Robertson & Allen 2015, Nelson et al. 2016). Distribution: Marine, rarely freshwater; Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans (Nelson et al. 2016). One genus and three species in Nicaraguan freshwaters.
