Holotype. (♂) Malaysia: SE Sabah, nr Danum Valley Field C, Malaise trap 15, c 150 m, 20.x.–22.xii.1987, C. van Achterberg, RMNH´87 (Leiden).

Paratype. (♂) Malaysia: SW Sabah, nr Long Pa Sia (West), c. 1050 m, 1–14.iv.1987, Mal. trap 3, C. van Achterberg, RMNH´87 (Leiden) .

Description. ♂. Body length 10.0– 10.5 mm.

Head. Flagellum with 35 flagellomeres, bristle-shaped; 1 st flagellomere 2.8 × longer than wide. Tyloids on flagellomeres 10/11–13/14, long-oval, maximally 0.5 × as long as their flagellomeres. Temple short, strongly and roundly narrowed behind eye. OED 1.6 × and OOD 0.4 × ocellar diameter. Frons smooth, with some sparse punctures dorsally. Face densely punctate. Clypeus large, flat, with rather dense punctuation; apical margin sharp, slightly rounded (fig. 23A). Mandible seen from frontal sickle-shaped, ventral tooth small and strongly turned inwards (fig. 23A). Malar space 0.6 × as long as width of mandibular base. Gena densely punctate. Genal carina reaching mandibular base.

Mesosoma . Mesoscutum finely and densely punctate, dull. Mesopleuron with rather dense superficial punctures, shining; speculum with fine punctures. Metapleuron punctate (in HT) or ± striate (in PT). Scutellum pyramidal, with strong lateral carina forming a distinct lamelliform extension which is slightly bent outwards. Propodeum with strong apophysis (fig. 23B). Area superomedia hexagonal, slightly wider than long (confluent with area basalis in HT); costula reaching its basal 0.4. Hind femur 4.7 × longer than wide. Areolet pentagonal, frontal distance between veins 2rs-m and 3rs-m 1.0 × their width. Vein 1cu-a postfurcal by 2.0 × its width.

Metasoma. Postpetiole slightly widened, with microsculpture and few fine punctures, shining. 2 nd tergite 1.1 × longer than wide. Gastrocoelus slightly impressed. Thyridium small, transverse, 0.3 × as wide as interval between thyridia (fig. 23C). 2 nd tergite finely and densely punctate, finely rugose and aciculate basally, dull. Following tergites with superficial punctures, ± shining. Hypopygium unmodified, apical margin rounded.

Colour. Flagellum black, flagellomeres 8/9–16 ivory dorsally. Head and mesosoma red. Palps, mandible except teeth, clypeus, face and frontal orbit ivory; gena yellowish. Frons and temples black. Scape red ventrally. 1 st tergite reddish. 2 nd and 3 rd tergites mainly black, yellowish laterally and apically (in PT) or yellowish, with black basal spots (in HT) (fig. 23C). 4 th to 6 th tergites blackish or brownish, yellowish laterally and apically. 7 th tergite and paramere yellowish. Fore and mid legs including coxae reddish-yellow; mid coxa basally and mid tarsus mainly brown; hind leg black, hind coxa red dorsally. Wings slightly yellowish; pterostigma yellow.

Remarks. I was not able to correlate these ♂♂ with any ♀♀ of the known Eccoptosage species from the Oriental region and describe them as a new species here, but the taxonomy of the Oriental Eccoptosage species is fragmentary to date. More studies of the available type material, additional collection activities and genomic studies are necessary in the future for a comprehensive revision of this rather large genus.

Distribution. Only known from Borneo.
