Type species: Acarus phalangoides De Geer, 1778 .
Diagnosis. Adult (after Roland & Gabryś 2020). Large to moderately large Erythraeidae . Coloration reddish to brownish. Two eyes on each side of aspidosoma. Crista metopica elongate with anterior and posterior sensillary areas; anterior sensillary area with a pair of sensilla and numerous nonsensillary setae; posterior sensillary area with a pair of sensilla. Specific, conical spines (conalae) always present on palp tibia and, very often, on palp genu. Dorsal opisthosomal setae simple (setiform) or modified. Legs long, with serratalae weakly to strongly developed.
Deutonymph (after Stålstedt et al. 2016). Similar to adult but smaller and with sparser setation. Urvulva (external genital plate of deutonymph, after Southcott (1961)) of comparable size to anal sclerite or smaller. Conalae and semiconalae of palp genu and palp tibia, if present, more weakly developed.
Larva (after Stålstedt et al. 2016). Scutum oval or trapezoidal in outline, with two pairs of trichobothria and two pairs of non-sensillary setae. Eyes, each composed of double lens, placed laterally to scutum. Leg segmentation formula 7-7-7. fnCx = 1-1-1, fnTr = 1-1-1, fnbFe = 2-2-2, 2-2-1 or 3-3-3.
Distribution. Worldwide except Antarctica.
