Lonchaea fiji View in CoL sp. nov.
Description. Male: Head. Eyes bare. Frons subshining black, centrally dulled with fine micro-sculpture, smoother along eye margins, frontal and interfrontals short, at most 0.25 length of orbital seta, orbital plates polished black, bare apart from orbital seta. Lunule intensely silver dusted, upper face and parafacials subshining, lower face glittering black. Anterior genal setulae in a single row of approximately 7 along mouth margin, basal setulae almost twice as long as and slightly stronger than the others. Antennae black, pedicel slightly brown basally, 1st flagellomere 1.9x as long as deep, arista with long plumes, at maximum width two thirds depth of 1st flagellomere. Thorax: Thoracic dorsum and sclerites shining blue black, setulae on dorsum very short, Anepisternum with posterior setae missing due to damage, two strong anterodorsal setae. Prothorax bare. Katepisternum with one strong dorsocentral seta, remainder of tergite with a scattering of fine setulae. Proepimeron with one fine seta. Scutellum shining black, almost all setulae and setae missing. Calypteres pale with a short white fringe. Legs entirely black, front and hind basal tarsomeres with ventral fringe obscurely brown. Wings slightly and evenly fumose, veins brown. Wing length 4.0 mm. 1st sternite bare.
Male terminalia: ( Figs. 10–13 View FIGURES 10 – 13 ). In lateral view epandrium slightly wider than high, cerci small and fleshy, hardly extending beyond the shell of epandrium, laterally with a row of 7–8 very strong blade–like setae. Inner surface of surstyli partially divided into two lobes each with an obvious posterior projection, outer lobe with an irregular row of setulae along outer margin, these becoming longer and stronger anteriorly where they extend out beyond the margin of the epandrium, posterior projection bare, inner lobe bare apart from posterior projection which has a single row of four long setulae along its outer margin, two shorter setulae apically. Phallus J-shaped, two segmented, apical part almost straight, slightly angled inwardly at the apex, basal part relatively simple without processes or spinules.
Type material: Holotype ♂. FIJI ; Viti Levu, Lami, 0–200m, -. ii.1977, N.L.H. Krauss.
Only known from the Holotype.
Differential diagnosis: Distinguished primarily by the structure of the male genitalia, the presence of a row of very strong blade-like setae on either side of the cerci is a diagnostic feature.
