Leucothoe spinicarpa ( Abildgaard, 1789)
Gammarus spinicarpa Abildgaard, 1789: 67 , figs 1–4.
Leucothoe spinicarpa Sars, 1895: 283 , 284, pls 100, 101. — Leucothoe spinicarpa Crowe, 2006: 59–64 , figs 1–5 (neotype).
Type locality and specimens. Skagerrak Sea , Denmark. Type material lost. Trondhjemsfjorden, Norway. Neotype, male, 13.1 mm, ZMO F 14088.
Material examined. No material available for examination. Diagnosis based on description by Sars (1895) and Crowe (2006).
Diagnosis. Ventral keel with cuspate anteroventral margin. Gnathopod 2 carpus with small subdistal tooth;
propodus mediofacial setal row displaced to midline. Pereopods 5–7 bases narrowly expanded. Epimeron 1 with anteroventral tuft of setae. Telson apex bidentate.
Note. There are hundreds of references to L. spinicarpa in the literature, reporting this species as having a worldwide distribution. Most of these references are suspect. Crowe (2006) did not clarify the status of these references in her redescription of L. spinicarpa . Material used in all descriptions of L. spinicarpa not listed as synonymies here needs to be examined to determine if they are L. spinicarpa .
Female (sexually dimorphic characters). Gnathopod 2 more setose; carpus truncate without subapical tooth. Telson apically blunt.
Habitat. Habitat not reported; 50–300 m (reported as 30–150 fthm).
Host. Ascidians (branchial cavity).
Distribution. Northern Atlantic Ocean: Skagerrak Sea, Denmark ( Abildgaard 1789), Trondhjemsfjorden, Norway ( Sars 1895; Crowe 2006).
