Diagnosis. A black species with yellow anterior pairs of tibiae and tarsi. N. nigrinus lacks the yellow body markings found on other European Nemotelus species. Wing vein R4+5 apically simple, unforked. Genitalia: Rozkošný (1973), Rozkošný (1983).
Distribution. Holarctic. Widespread but local in Finland. N. nigrinus occurs in all Finnish ecoregions except the arctic highlands in the north.
Comments. Rozkošný (1973) describes the habitat of N. nigrinus as swamps and moors. Stubbs & Drake (2001) provide more details and note that it is associated with open wetlands on calcareous soils and along coasts. Adults are occasionally found even on xeric grasslands ( Stuke 2003). Habitats of the recent Finnish finds range from calcareous springs to coastal marshes and small pools or seepages on urban wastelands. Shared factors are the lack of a tree canopy, a relatively warm, sheltered microclimate, and the presence of minor water bodies (pools, fens, seepages, ditches) with brackish or otherwise mineral-rich water. The early stages of N. nigrinus remain undescribed.
