Tulasnella phuhinrongklaensis C. Rachanarin, N. Suwannarach & S. Lumyong View in CoL , sp. nov. ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 )

MycoBank MB822837

Etymology:— ‘ phuhinrongklaensis ’ pertaining to Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park where the host orchid was collected, and the new fungus was isolated.

Holotype:— THAILAND. Phitsanulok Province: Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park , (N16°89ʹ35ʺ, E101°09ʹ91ʺ), isolated as an endophyte from root of Phalaenopsis pulcherrima Lindl. , 15 October 2015, K. Srimuang, dried cultures ( CMU-CR41 ): SDBR-CMU309 ; ex-type living culture: TBRC7650 View Materials .

Gene sequences (from holotype):— MF427707 ( ITS), MF427703 ( LSU).

Diagnosis:— The monilioid cells clearly distinguishes it from other Tulasnella and Epulorhiza species, except for E. albertensis . Tulasnella phuhinrongklaensis has mostly larger monilioid cells (15–32.5 × 7.5–17.5 μm) than E. albertensis (15–24 × 10–12 μm).

Description:— The fungal growth rates on OA, MEA, CMA and PDA were 5.47±0.05, 5.13±0.15, 4.87±1.12 and 4.58± 1.10 mm /day, respectively, after incubation at 25 °C in the dark. Colonies on PDA effuse, white to cream coloured, reverse white ( Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 ). Colonies on OA, MEA and CMA flat, white, sparse surface and reverse white ( Fig. 2B–D View FIGURE 2 ). All culture media, mycelia superficial and immersed, regularly septate with right-angled branching, hyaline, 4–7 μm wide ( Fig. 2E View FIGURE 2 ), binucleate cells ( Fig. 2F View FIGURE 2 ). Monilioid cells observed only on CMA, hyaline, spherical to ellipsoid, 15–32.5 × 7.5–17.5 μm ( Fig. 2G View FIGURE 2 ). Sclerotia absent on all tested media.

Other cultures examined:— THAILAND. Phitsanulok Province: Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, (N16°89ʹ35ʺ, E101°09ʹ91ʺ), isolated as an endophyte from roots of Phalaenopsis pulcherrima, Oct 2015 , K. Srimuang, living cultures: CMU-CR42, CMU-CR43 and CMU-CR44.
